1.1 This classification system covers the properties of vulcanized rubber materials (natural rubber, reclaimed rubber, synthetic rubbers, alone or in combination) that are intended for, but not limited to, use in rubber products for automotive applications. Note 18212;This classification system may serve many of the needs of other industries in much the same manner as SAE numbered steels. It must be remembered, however, that this system is subject to revision when required by automotive needs. It is recommended that the latest revision always be used. 1.2 This classification system is based on the premise that the properties of all rubber products can be arranged into characteristic material designations. These designations are determined by types, based on resistance to heat aging, and classes, based on resistance to swelling in oil. Basic levels are thus established which, together with values describing additional requirements, permit complete description of the quality of all elastomeric materials. 1.3 In all cases where the provisions of this classification system would conflict with those of the detailed specifications for a particular product, the latter shall take precedence. Note 28212;When the rubber product is to be used for purposes where the requirements are too specific to be completely prescribed by this classification system, it is necessary for the purchaser to consult the supplier in advance, to establish the appropriate properties, test methods, and specification test limits. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.

Type 1 latex allergy most commonly manifests as localized urticaria after contact of skin with natural rubber but can also include symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma and rarely anaphylaxis. This immediate (Type I) allergy is caused by natural proteins inherent to the rubber tree, which remain on the finished natural rubber products. The quantification of protein levels in NRL products using the standard colorimetric protein assays may give spurious results due to chemical additives in the latex formulations that interfere with the assay (2,3). Furthermore, the amount of protein found in NRL products are often below the detection limits of the standard colorimetric protein assay (4,5). This test method describes an immunological method for quantitation of natural rubber latex proteins using rabbit anti-NRL serum. Rabbits immunized with NRL proteins react to the majority of the proteins present, and their sera have the capability to detect most if not all of the proteins in NRL. Therefore, although rabbit antibody reacts with antigenic material, this should not be considered as quantitative measure of total protein levels.1.1 This test method covers an immunological method to determine the amount of antigenic protein in natural rubber and its products using rabbit antisera specific for natural rubber latex (NRL) proteins. This immunoassay procedure quantitatively measures the level of antigenic latex proteins in solution using an inhibition format. The samples may include glove or other rubber product extracts which have been collected in order to measure the latex protein levels. Although this method detects antigenic proteins, it should not be considered as a measure of allergenic proteins. Correlation of protein/antigen levels with the level of allergenic proteins has not been fully established. 1.2 For the purpose of this test method, the range of protein will be measured in terms of microgram to milligram quantities. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

These abbreviations are to be used in technical writing where the full chemical name of the substance is used initially, followed by the abbreviation found in this terminology. Later references to this substance may then use the abbreviation only.1.1 This terminology is a compilation of abbreviations for accelerators, vulcanizing agents, activators, antidegradants, plasticizers, softeners, processing aids, blowing agents, retarders, isocyanates, peroxides, and antireversion agents used in the compounding of rubber products. Abbreviations for rubbers are listed in Practice D1418 and a numbering system for various grades of carbon blacks is described in Classification D1765.

5.1 This test method is used to determine the vulcanization characteristics of (vulcanizable) rubber compounds under selected test conditions of strain and frequency which do not significantly affect the cured dynamic properties. In the same test, this test method also will measure the dynamic properties of the vulcanizate at temperatures significantly below the cure temperature. These lower temperature measurements are necessary in order to more effectively relate to rubber product service conditions. 5.2 This test method may be used for quality control in rubber manufacturing processes and for research and development testing of rubber compounds containing curatives. This test method also may be used for evaluating cure and dynamic property differences resulting from the use of different compounding ingredients. 5.3 For additional information regarding the significance of dynamic testing of vulcanized rubber, the reader may wish to reference Guide D5992. 1.1 This test method covers the use of a rotorless oscillating shear rheometer for measuring after cure dynamic properties at predetermined temperature(s) below the cure temperature. 1.2 Specified cure conditions that approximate a ???static cure??? also are covered to minimize effects on cured rubber compound dynamic properties. This test method is not intended to replace Test Method D5289. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 Warning???Compounds based on silicone or fluoroelastomers may have high levels of thermal contraction or poor adhesion to the dies when cooled after the cure portion of this test method, causing slippage during strain sweeps. If this occurs, the results will not be reliable.
