1.1 This test method covers the determination of the iodine adsorption number of carbon black.1.1.1 Procedure A is the original procedure for this determination.1.1.2 Procedure B specifies an increased sample mass of carbon black and volume of iodine solution (the ratio is the same as in Procedure A) which results in a simplified formula for the calculation of the iodine number.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 The iodine adsorption number of carbon black has been shown to decrease with sample aging. Standard values for current SRB's may be obtained from the Subcommittee Chairman of D24.61.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Several test methods for carbon black require the reduction in sample size or the blending of the test sample to reduce the variation of the measured characteristic. Other factors being equal, larger samples will tend to be more representative of the total supply. This practice provides procedures for reducing the large sample obtained from the bag and bulk sampling practices to a convenient size for conducting a number of tests to describe the material and measure its quality in such a manner that the smaller portion is most likely to be a representation of the bulk sample. Failure to follow the procedures in this practice could result in providing a nonrepresentative sample to be used in subsequent testing. Individual test methods provide for minimum amounts of material to be tested. Test Method A, Reduction of Sample Size, is typically used to obtain an aliquot from a large sample, splitting a black into two or more equal portions, or reducing a blended black from Test Method B to a specified sample size. The final sample is always smaller than the original sample and would not be considered to be a “well blended” sample. Test Method B, Blending of Carbon Black, is typically used to prepare a homogeneous sample. The homogeneous sample may be used for several tests (see Note 3) or may be reduced in size by Test Method A. The final sample size is the same as the original. When a sample is to be blended and reduced, the sample should be blended (Test Method B) before reduction (Test Method A). The blending and reduction must be done before the sample is dried (Test Method C).1.1 This practice describes the procedure for blending of pelleted carbon black, the procedure for the reduction of gross samples of pelleted carbon black to the appropriate size for testing and the preparation of the sample for testing. These techniques are intended to minimize variations in measured characteristics between test samples. Standard terminology relating to carbon black samples is found in Terminology D 3053. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This practice is for use in obtaining representative samples of carbon black from the packages in the shipment. These samples are used to determine the average quality or variability of the shipment.1.1 This practice covers the sampling of packaged carbon blacks for shipment in bags, cartons, flexible immediate bulk containers (FIBC), or other non-bulk packages. Note 18212;The tests to be made on the samples obtained by this practice shall be determined by the producer and the consumer. The specific details of each test method are described in appropriate ASTM methods used for testing carbon black. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This test method covers the measurement of specific surface area of carbon black exclusive of area contained in micropores too small to admit hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, commonly referred to as CTAB). However, it should be noted that the preferred method for measuring external surface area is STSA (Test Method D 6556), and the CTAB method is being maintained by ASTM International in order to allow time for laboratories to obtain the proper instrumentation.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. These test methods are mainly intended for referee purposes but may be used for quality control of rubber production. They may also be used in research and development work and for comparison of different samples in a standard test formula. These test methods may also be used to obtain values for customer acceptance of rubber.1.1 These test methods specify the standard materials, test formula, mixing procedures, and test methods for the evaluation of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) mixed with carbon black. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Particulate emissions are major contributors to air contamination in industrial and urban environments. Soot is formed as an unwanted by-product of combustion and consequently varies widely with the type of fuel and combustion conditions. Carbon black, on the other hand, is purposely produced under a controlled set of conditions. Therefore, it is important to be able to distinguish carbon black from soot, as well as other environmental contaminants.1.1 This practice covers sampling and testing for distinguishing ASTM type carbon black, in the N100 to N900 series, from other environmental particulates. 1.2 This practice requires some degree of expertise on the part of the microscopist. For this reason, the microscopist must have adequate training and substantial on-the-job experience in identifying the morphological parameters of carbon black. In support of this analysis, Donnet's book is highly recommended to be used as a technical reference for recognizing and understanding the microstructure of carbon black. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Method A, Fines8212;The fines content of carbon black is related to the bulk flowability, dustiness, and, in some instances, the level of dispersion. Due to the many other variables that influence dispersion and handling, the significance of fines content must be determined by the user. Method B, Attrition8212;By comparing the percent fines and attrition, an indication can be obtained of pellet stability and the amount of fines that may be created by pellet degradation in conveying, handling or transit.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the fines and attrition of pelleted carbon black. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
