The toluene discoloration value provides an estimate of toluene-soluble discoloring residues present on the carbon black.1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the degree of toluene discoloration by carbon black extractables and is useful in controlling the reaction processes for production of carbon black. This test method may not be applicable to carbon blacks with high extractables.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The quantitative determination of acid extractable content is useful in evaluating activated carbon samples that contain acid soluble impurities. These acid soluble impurities can affect applications of activated carbon. Limitations of Method8212;Hydrochloric acid is used in this test method as the extracting acid. All elements or compounds present in the activated carbon sample, which can be acid extracted, are assumed to form water soluble chloride salts. Hydrochloric acid may not solubilize all impurities of activated carbon.1.1 This test method is to be used for determination of the acid extractable content of a sample of activated carbon. This test method presupposes the existence of substances other than carbon to be present with activated carbon but does not purport to address or identify those substances which may be present. This test method should be applicable to any form in which activated carbon may exist and requires the performance of Test Method D2866. 1.2 This test method requires the use of concentrated hydrochloric acid, which should be used in an appropriate and safe manner, with eye protection, skin protection and handling carried out in a properly operating fume hood. The proper use of a muffle furnace is addressed in Test Method D2866. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determines the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This guide covers a procedure for using ASTM Standard Reference Blacks (SRBs) to continuously monitor the precision of those carbon black test methods for which standard values have been established. It also offers guidelines for trouble-shooting various test methods.1.2 This guide establishes the limits within which the statistical calibration procedure of Practice D3324 shall be applied and establishes the limits for an out-of-calibration condition beyond which the statistical calibration procedure of Practice D3324 shall not be applied.1.3 This guide uses statistical control chart methodology as discussed in STP-15-D to determine if a laboratory's test results differ significantly from the accepted values of the SRBs and provides a format for reporting test data for specified tests on the SRB blacks. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. The carbon black extract test procedure provides a uniform and precise method for the gravimetric determination of organic-solvent extractables on carbon black. Accuracy and precision are acceptable for most specification or regulatory purposes, or both. However, carbon black with very low extract (less than 0.02 %) may require a more rigorous extraction procedure. The actual chemical composition of the extract can vary significantly with the type and origin of the carbon black.1.1 This test method covers the procedure for measuring carbon black solvent extractables.1.1.1 This test method determines the total material extracted from carbon black by toluene under specified conditions. The procedure is also applicable to other solvents such as cyclohexane, etc.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the iodine adsorption number of carbon black.1.1.1 Procedure A is the original procedure for this determination.1.1.2 Procedure B specifies an increased sample mass of carbon black and volume of iodine solution (the ratio is the same as in Procedure A) which results in a simplified formula for the calculation of the iodine number.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 The iodine adsorption number of carbon black has been shown to decrease with sample aging. Standard values for current SRB's may be obtained from the Subcommittee Chairman of D24.61.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1 This International Standard establishes a system of designation for filament yarns of carbon fibre which may be used as the basis for specifications. 2 This designation system is applicable to filament yams used for the reinforcement of polymer composites. It does not apply to discontinuous fibre products pyrolized in the form of staple yarns, woven fabrics, braids, knits, mats, etc. 3 The types of filament yarns are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties: a) tensile modulus of elasticity; b) tensile strength; c) linear density. 4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give the same performance. This International Standard does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions wNch may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. 5 In order to specify a filament yarn for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing, additional requirements may be given in data block 3 (see clause 3).
