1.1 The scope of this part of EN 10088 is to specify the technical delivery conditions for hot or cold formed bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products of standard and special grades of corrosion resisting stainless steels for construction purposes in addition to the general technical delivery conditions specified in EN 10021. 1.2 This European Standard does not apply to components manufactured by further processing of the product forms listed in 1.1 with quality characteristics altered as a result of such further processing.

This document specifies the technical delivery requirements for the following steel products intended for use in the construction industry: bars (including hammer-forged bars); wide flats; hot-rolled strip and sheet/plate; forgings. They are manufactured from the direct hardening non alloy steels for quenching and tempering and the direct hardening alloy steels for quenching and tempering and supplied in one of the heat treatment conditions given for the different types of products in Table 1. These steels are generally intended for the manufacture of quenched and tempered parts, but can also be used in the normalized condition. The requirements for mechanical properties are restricted to part sizes given in Tables 4 and 5. NOTE 1 In accordance with EN 10020, the steels covered by this standard are quality and special steels. The differences between quality and special steels are characterized by the following requirements, which are valid for special steels only:  the minimum impact values in the quenched and tempered condition (for non alloy special steels in the case of mean percentages by mass of carbon < 0,50 % only);  limited oxide inclusion content;  lower maximum contents for phosphorus and sulphur. NOTE 2 This standard does not apply for bright steel products. NOTE 3 This standard only applies for the manufacture of products without any further cold or hot forming and no additional heat treatment, i.e. the properties are according to the delivery condition (+N, +QT). In addition to the specifications of this European Standard, the general technical delivery conditions given in EN 10021 will be applicable unless otherwise specified.

In 1941, the SAE Iron and Steel Division in collaboration with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) made a major change in the method of expressing composition ranges for the SAE steels. The plan, as now applied, is based in general on narrower ladle analysis ranges plus certain product (check) analysis allowances on individual samples, in place of the fixed ranges and limits without tolerances formerly provided for carbon and other elements in SAE steels (reference SAE J408). ISTC Division 1 has developed a procedure which allows for the maintenance of the grade list in this SAE Standard. This will involve conducting an industry-wide survey to solicit input. This survey will be conducted at a frequency deemed necessary by the technical committee. Criteria have been established for the addition to or deletion of grades from the grade table. A new grade will be considered if it meets standard SAE grade ranges, has a minimum usage or production of 225 tonnes/year (250 tons/year), and has the endorsement of at least two users or producers. New steel compositions will still be considered as Potential Standard (PS) steels, based on the guidelines provided in SAE J1081, until such time as production of the new steel achieves a level of production or usage qualifying it for consideration as a standard steel. The deletion of a grade from the grade table will be by consensus based on the grade survey results. Deleted grades will be archived in SAE J1249 for future reference. The compositions in this document may apply to open hearth and basic oxygen, or electric furnace steels. Grades shown in Table 1 with prefix letter E are normally made by the electric furnace process with maximum limits of 0.025% phosphorus and 0.025% sulfur. The nominal chemical limits or ranges in the compositions given in Table 1 are subject to standard variations in check analysis given in SAE J409. Since AISI is no longer issuing steel grade designations, all grades listed in this document are SAE grades.
