1.1 This specification covers the magnetic properties of 50 nickel-50 iron parts fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques and is intended for parts that require high magnetic permeability, high electrical resistivity, low coercive field strength, and low hysteresis loss. It differs from the wrought alloy specification (see Specification A 753) because these parts are porous. A number of magnetic properties such as permeability are proportional to the sintered density.1.2 This specification deals with P/M parts in the sintered or annealed condition. Should the sintered parts be subjected to any secondary operation that causes mechanical strain, such as machining or sizing, they should be resintered or annealed.1.3 The values stated in customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units, which are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

The rate and uniformity of die cavity filling are related to flow properties, which thus influence production rates and uniformity of compacted parts. The ability of a powder to flow is a function of interparticle friction. As interparticle friction increases, flow is slowed. Fine powders may not flow. Humidity and moisture content influence flow rate. Wet or moist powders may not flow. This test method may be part of the purchase agreement between powder manufacturers and powder metallurgy (P/M) part producers, or it can be an internal quality control test by either the producer or the end user.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the flow rate of metal powders and is suitable only for those powders that will flow unaided through the specified apparatus.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard (except for the flowmeter funnel, which is fabricated in inch-pound units). The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This practice covers the de-agglomeration of refractory metal powders and their compounds in preparation for particle size analysis.1.2 Experience has shown that this practice is satisfactory for the de-agglomeration of elemental tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, and tantalum metal powders, and tungsten carbide. Other metal powders (for example, elemental metals, carbides, and nitrides) may be prepared for particle size analysis using this practice with caution as to effectiveness until actual satisfactory experience is developed.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statements, see Note 2.

This test method provides a guide for evaluation of the apparent density physical characteristic of powders. The density measured bears a relationship to the mass of powder that will fill a fixed volume die cavity when parts are being made. The degree of correlation between the results of this test method and the quality of powders in use will vary with each particular application.1.1 This test method covers a procedure for determining the apparent density of non-free-flowing metal powders. It is designed for those metal powders that do not freely flow through the Hall flowmeter funnel. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This practice covers procedures for preparing pressed powder transfer standards of reflectance factor. These standards can be used in the near-ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared region of the spectrum. Procedures for calibrating the reflectance factor of materials on an absolute basis are contained in CIE Publication No. 44 (2). Pressed powder standards are used as transfer standards for such calibrations because they have a high reflectance factor which is nearly constant with wavelength and because the distribution of reflected flux resembles that from the perfect reflecting diffuser. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.1 This specification covers the magnetic properties of 50 nickel-50 iron parts fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques and is intended for parts that require high magnetic permeability, high electrical resistivity, low coercive force and low hysteresis losses. It differs from the wrought alloy because parts are generally porous (see Specification A753). Porosity can cause some of the magnetic properties to differ from the wrought grade because some magnetic properties are directly proportional to the sintered density. 1.2 The 50 nickel-50 iron parts shall have a typical chemistry as shown in Table 1. Magnetic properties are affected significantly by the sintering process. Magnetic properties of as-sintered products vary greatly with respect to carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulphur content. The levels of these elements should be agreed upon between the producer and user. Parts made through powder metallurgy techniques, including metal injection molding are generally to configuration of the desired part. 1.2.1 If secondary or machining operations are required, which may stress the part, an anneal should be provided to restore magnetic properties to the as-sintered condition, as defined in this specification.
