1.1 This standard specifies the technical safety requirements and measures to be adopted by persons undertaking the design, construction and supply (including installation and dismantling, with arrangements for transport and maintenance) of milling machines (see 3.1) including machines capable of performing boring operations (see 3.5). Machines covered by this standard include but are not limited to: -- knee and column type milling machines (see figures C.1, C.2); -- bed-type milling machines (see figure C.3); -- multi-spindle milling machines (see figures C.4 and C.5); -- piano-milling machines (see figures C.4 and C.5); -- profile and contouring milling machines (see figure C.6), -- milling and boring machines (see figure C.7). 1.2 This standard takes account of intended use including reasonably foreseeable misuse, maintenance, cleaning, and setting operations. It presumes access to the machine from all directions. It describes means to reduce risks to operators and other exposed persons. 1.3 This standard also applies to workpiece transfer devices when they form an integral part of the machine. 1.4 This standard deals with significant hazards relevant to milling machines when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer (see clause 4). 1.5 Hazards arising from other metal working processes (e.g. grinding, turning, forming, EDM, laser processing) are covered by other standards (see Bibliography). 1.6 Milling machines with automatic tool changing capabilities are not covered by this standard (see prEN 12417:1996). 1.7 This standard is not applicable to milling machines which were manufactured before the date of publication by CEN of this standard.

ISO 13041-3:2008 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1 and ISO 230-7, the geometric tests on general-purpose, numerically controlled (NC) turning machines and turning centres with inverted vertical workholding spindles, as well as the corresponding applicable tolerances. This part of ISO 13041 presents the different concepts or configurations and common features of NC turning machines and turning centres with inverted vertical spindles. It also provides a terminology and designation of controlled axes. (See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4.) This part of ISO 13041 deals only with the verification of the accuracy of the machine. It does not apply to the operational testing of the machine (e.g. vibration, abnormal noise, stick-slip motion of components), nor to machine characteristics (e.g. speeds, feeds), as such checks are generally carried out before testing accuracy.

This part of ISO 8636 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, ISO 230-2, and ISO 230-7, geometric tests, machining tests, and tests for checking accuracy and repeatability of positioning of numerically controlled axes for general-purpose normal accuracy bridge-type milling machines with a travelling bridge (gantry-type). This part of ISO 8636 also specifies the applicable tolerances corresponding to the above-mentioned tests. This part of ISO 8636 is applicable to machines with travelling bridge and fixed table. It does not include single-column (open sided) machines and those with fixed bridge and moving tables. This part of ISO 8636 deals only with the verification of the accuracy of the machine. It does not apply to the testing of the machine operation (vibration, abnormal noise, stick-slip motion of components, etc.) nor to machine characteristics (such as speeds, feeds, etc.), which should generally be checked before testing the accuracy. This part of ISO 8636 provides the terminology used for the principal components of the machines and the designation of the axes with reference to ISO 841.
