This British Standard gives recommendations for validation methods for welding equipment constructed and used to the accuracy specified in BS EN 60974-1 or other equivalent standards. The accuracy of this equipment is designated as standard grade. The welding equipment covered by this standard includes: 1) welding power sources; 2) wire feeders; 3) welding instrumentation. Guidance is also given on the calibration and validation of ancillary equipment which may affect the quality of the weld, e.g. flow gauges, thermocouples, robots and manipulators.

This standard is intended for use when the welding speed for electron beam welding machines complying with EN ISO 14744-1 is to be measured in connection with an acceptance inspection. It provides essential information on the procedure and apparatus to be used for making the measurements. Alternative standardised procedures can be used, provided they have at least the same acceptance inspection as the welds specified in this part 4. The measured parameter is the speed of the translational and rotational movements required to perform the welding operation. The welding speed is one of the significant parameters in electron beam welding. The workpiece or the weld point shall thus be moved at a uniform speed, in a reproducible manner, within given short-term and long-term limits. The purpose of the measurement is to check whether the variations in welding speed are maintained within these limits.

The main purpose of this standard is to provide requirements for acceptance inspection of electron beam welding machines preferably when first installed on the user's premises. This standard can (in full or in part) be referred to in contracts for supply of electron beam welding machines. Further tests are not normally required if proof of satisfactory welding results is provided in the form of routine inspection documentation. However, the requirements of the standard can also be used for inspection as part of maintenance, if required by contract. If modifications are made to an electron beam welding machine (rebuilding, repairs, modification to the operating conditions etc.) such as may have an effect on the acceptance inspection, repeat tests can be necessary covering the machine parameters affected by such modifications. If a welding machine that has already been accepted is dismantled (e.g. in order to change its location), such tests would involve verification according to the requirements in clauses 4, 6.2 to 6.4 and 7.

This standard is intended for use when the stability of spot stability of welding machines complying with EN ISO 14744-1 is to be measured in connection with an acceptance inspection. It provides essential information to the procedure and apparatus to be used for making the measurements. The stability of the spot position is a particularly significant parameter for prolonged welding applications and for electron beam welding with automatic devices positioning the workpiece. In such applications, the welding machine shall be able to reproduce, over prolonged periods and without additional correction of the position being required, a given beam-to-joint alignment. The purpose of measurement is to check whether and to what extent the electron beam generated by a welding machine keeps within the range of limit deviations specified for the spot position.

This standard is intended for use when the run-out accuracy of the moving parts of electron beam welding machines complying with EN ISO 14744-1 is to be measured in connection with an acceptance inspection. It provides information on the procedure and apparatus to be used for making the measurements. Given the great variety of electron beam welding machines, the scope of measurements required for acceptance inspection purposes should be specified separately for the machine concerned. Run-out accuracy as defined here is a systematic error and thus counts as one of the parameters by which the performance of a machine tool can be characterized. Other factors influencing performance (e.g. dynamic forces, vacuum level, positioning accuracy of CNC machines) and methods of statistical evaluation are not covered in this standard. Electron beam welding involves movement of the workpiece and/or of the electron gun. Successful welding presupposes that this movement is effected by the devices concerned (e.g. work table and rotating fixture) with a given degree of accuracy. The purpose of the measurement is thus to check whether and to what extent the required run-out accuracy is maintained.
