This part of IEC 60034 establishes the principal characteristics of a.c. generators under the control of their voltage regulators when used for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven generating set applications and supplements the requirements given in IEC 60034-1. It covers the use of such generators for land and marine use@ but excludes generating sets used on aircraft or used to propel land vehicles and locomotives. NOTE 1 For some specific applications (e.g. essential hospital supplies@ high-rise buildings@ etc.) supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of this standard should be regarded as a basis for such requirements. NOTE 2 Attention is drawn to the need to take note of additional regulations or requirements imposed by various regulatory bodies. Such regulations or requirements may form the subject of agreement between the customer and the manufacturer when conditions of use of the end product invoke such requirements. NOTE 3 Examples of regulatory authorities: ? classification societies@ for generating sets used on ships and offshore installations; ? government agencies; ? inspection agencies@ local utilities@ etc. Annex A discusses the behaviour of generators covered by this standard when subjected to sudden load changes.

This part of IEC 60034 specifies efficiency classes for single-speed, three-phase, 50 Hz and 60 Hz, cage-induction motors that: • have a rated voltage UN up to 1 000 V; NOTE The standard also applies to motors rated for two or more voltages and/or frequencies. • have a rated output PN between 0,75 kW and 375 kW; • have either 2, 4 or 6 poles; • are rated on the basis of either duty type S1 (continuous duty) or S3 (intermittent periodic duty) with a rated cyclic duration factor of 80 % or higher; • are capable of operating direct on-line; • are rated for operating conditions in accordance with IEC 60034-1, Clause 6. Motors with flanges, feet and/or shafts with mechanical dimensions different from IEC 60072-1 are covered by this standard. Geared motors and brake motors are covered by this standard although special shafts and flanges may be used in such motors. Excluded are: • Motors made solely for converter operation in accordance with IEC 60034-25. • Motors completely integrated into a machine (for example pump, fan and compressor) that cannot be tested separately from the machine.

IEC 61800-7 specifies profiles for Power Drive Systems (PDS) and their mapping to existing communication systems by use of a generic interface model. The functions specified in this part of IEC 61800-7 are not intended to ensure functional safety. This requires additional measures according to the relevant standards, agreements and laws. The general requirements of relevant parts of the IEC 60034 series of standards also apply to motors within the scope of this technical specification. NOTE 1 For motors operating in potentially explosive atmospheres, additional requirements as described in the IEC 60079 series apply. NOTE 2 This technical specification is not primarily concerned with safety. However, some of its recommendations may have implications for safety, which should be considered as necessary. NOTE 3 Where a converter manufacturer provides specific installation recommendations, they should take precedence over the recommendations of this technical specification.

This part of IEC 60034 applies to three-phase synchronous machines of 1 kVA rating and larger with rated frequency of not greater than 500 Hz and not less than 10 Hz. Most of the methods are intended to be used for machines having an excitation winding with slip-rings and brushes for their supply. Synchronous machines with brushless excitation require special effort for some of the tests. For machines with permanent magnet excitation, there is a limited applicability of the described tests, and special precautions have to be taken against irreversible demagnetization. Excluded are axial-field machines and special synchronous machines such as inductor type machines and transversal flux machines. It is not intended that this standard be interpreted as requiring any or all of the tests described therein on any given machine. The particular tests to be carried out shall be subject to agreement between manufacturer and customer.

This document describes very low frequency (VLF) testing of ac electric machines. It covers acceptance testing of new machines in the factory or on-site after erection. Also covered is the routine maintenance testing of machines that have been in service. In order to facilitate communication and comparison among investigators, this document recommends that the very low frequency used be 0.1 Hz +/- 10 percent.
