This part of IEC 61800 specifies requirements for adjustable speed power drive systems, or their elements, with respect to electrical, thermal and energy safety considerations. It does not cover the driven equipment except for interface requirements. It applies to adjustable speed electric drive systems which include the power conversion, drive control, and motor or motors. Excluded are traction and electric vehicle drives. It applies to d.c. drive systems connected to line voltages up to 1 kV a.c., 50 Hz or 60 Hz and a.c. drive systems with converter input voltages up to 35 kV, 50 Hz or 60 Hz and output voltages up to 35 kV. Other parts of IEC 61800 cover rating specifications, EMC, functional safety, etc. The scope of this part of IEC 61800 does not include devices used as component parts of a PDS if they comply with the safety requirements of a relevant product standard for the same environment. For example, motors used in PDS shall comply with the relevant parts of IEC 60034. Unless specifically stated, the requirements of this International Standard apply to all parts of the PDS, including the CDM/BDM (see Figure 1). NOTE In some cases, safety requirements of the PDS (for example, protection against direct contact) can necessitate the use of special components and/or additional measures.

This International standard specifies the parameters for four designs of starting performance of single-speed three-phase 50 Hz or 60 Hz cage induction motors in accordance with IEC 60034-1 that: • have a rated voltage up to 1 000 V; • are intended for direct-on-line or star-delta starting; • are rated on the basis of duty type S1; • are constructed to any degree of protection. The standard also applies to dual voltage motors provided that the flux saturation level is the same for both voltages and to motors having type of protection 'e – increased safety' with temperature classes T1 to T3 complying with IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-7. NOTE 1 It is not expected that all manufacturers will produce machines for all four designs. The selection of any specific design in accordance with this standard will be a matter of agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. NOTE 2 Designs other than the four specified may be necessary for particular applications. NOTE 3 The values of torque and apparent power given in this standard are limiting values (that is, minimum or maximum without tolerance), but it should be noted that values given in manufacturers' catalogues may include tolerances in accordance with IEC 60034-1. NOTE 4 The values tabled for locked rotor apparent power are based on r.m.s. symmetrical steady state locked rotor currents; at motor switch on there will be a one-half cycle asymmetrical instantaneous peak current which may range from 1,8 to 2,8 times the steady state value. The current peak and decay time are a function of the motor design and switching angle.

This part of IEC 61800 specifies requirements and makes recommendations for the design and development, integration and validation of PDS (SR)s in terms of their functional safety considerations. It applies to adjustable speed electric drive systems covered by the other parts of the IEC 61800 series of standard. This International Standard is only applicable where functional safety of a PDS (SR) is claimed and the PDS (SR) is operating in the high demand or continuous mode (see 3.10). For low demand applications, see IEC 61508. This part of IEC 61800, which is a product standard, sets out safety-related considerations of PDS (SR)s in terms of the framework of IEC 61508, and introduces requirements for PDS (SR)s as subsystems of a safety-related system. It is intended to facilitate the realization of the electrical/electronic/ programmable electronic (E/E/PE) elements of a PDS (SR) in relation to the safety performance of safety function(s) of a PDS. Manufacturers and suppliers of PDS (SR)s by using the normative requirements of this part of IEC 61800 will indicate to users (control system integrators, machinery and plant designers, etc.) the safety performance for their equipment. This will facilitate the incorporation of a PDS (SR) into a safety-related control system using the principles of IEC 61800, and possibly its specific sector implementations (for example IEC 61511, IEC 16513, IEC 62061) or ISO 13849. Conformity with this part of IEC 61800 fulfill all the requirements of IEC 61508 that are necessary for a PDS (SR).
