This technical report applies to composite hollow insulators consisting of a load bearing insulating tube made of resin impregnated fibres, a housing (outside the insulating tube) made of elastomeric material (for example silicone or ethylene-propylene) and metal fixing devices at the ends of the insulating tube. Composite hollow insulators as defined in this report are intended to be used under conditions involving internal pressure or free of pressure. They are intended for use in outdoor or indoor electrical equipment operating on alternating current with a rated voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz or for use in direct current equipment with a rated voltage greater than 1 500 V. The object of this report is: - to define the terms used; - to prescribe test methods; - to prescribe acceptance criteria. This report does not prescribe impulse voltage or power frequency voltage type tests or pollution tests because the withstand voltages are not characteristics of the hollow insulator itself, but of the apparatus of which it ultimately forms a part. NOTE 1 - "Internal pressure" means a permanent gas pressure greater than 0,05 MPa (0,5 bar) gauge. The gas can be dry air or inert gases, for example sulphur hexafluoride, nitrogen, or a mixture of such gases. NOTE 2 - "No internal pressure" means a gas or liquid pressure smaller than or equal to 0,05 MPa (0,5 bar) gauge. Where hydrostatic pressure exceeds 0,05 MPa different test procedures may be agreed. NOTE 3 - Composite hollow insulators are intended for use in electrical equipment, such as, but not limited to · circuit breakers; · switch-disconnectors; · disconnectors; · earthing switches; · instrument- and power transformers; · bushings. Additional testing defined by the relevant IEC equipment committee may be required.

This part of IEC 383 applies to insulators of ceramic material or glass for use on a.c. overhead power lines and overhead traction lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. It also applies to insulators for use on d.c. overhead electric traction lines. This part applies to string insulator units, rigid overhead line insulators and to insulators of similar design when used in substations. It does not apply to insulators forming parts of electrical apparatus or to parts used in their construction or to post insulators which are covered by IEC 168: Tests on indoor and outdoor post insulators of ceramic material or glass for systems with nominal voltages greater than 1 000 V. It may be regarded as a provisional standard for insulators for use on d.c. overhead power lines. IEC 438: Tests and dimensions for high-voltage d.c. insulators, gives general guidance for those insulators. NOTE An international standard dealing with tests on insulators for d.c. overhead lines is in preparation and is intended to replace the relevant clauses of IEC 438. Tests on insulator strings and insulator sets (for example, wet switching impulse voltage) are dealt with in part 2 of IEC 383. NOTE 1 This part does not include artificial pollution tests, radio-interference tests or residual strength tests. These subjects and relevant test methods are dealt with in the following IEC reports: IEC 437: Radio interference test on high-voltage insulators IEC 507: Artificial pollution tests on high-voltage insulators to be used on a.c. systems IEC 797: Residual strength of string insulator units of glass or ceramic material for overhead lines after mechanical damage of the dielectric. NOTE 2 The term "ceramic material" is used in this part to refer to porcelain materials and, contrary to North American practice, does not include glasses. The object of this part is: —to define the terms used; —to define insulator characteristics and to prescribe the conditions under which the specified values of these characteristics shall be verified; —to prescribe test methods; —to prescribe acceptance criteria. This part does not include requirements dealing with the choice of insulators for specific operating conditions. NOTE A guide for the choice of insulators under polluted conditions has been published, see IEC 815. Numerical values for insulator characteristics are specified in IEC 305, IEC 433 and IEC 720.

This International Standard is applicable to string insulator units of the long rod type with insulating parts of ceramic material intended for use in a.c. overhead power lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. It is also applicable to insulators of similar design, used in substations. This standard is applicable to ceramic string insulator units of the long rod type, either with a clevis end fitting at both ends for coupling with a tongue, or with a socket end fitting at both ends for coupling with a pin ball. The object of this standard is to prescribe specified values for electrical and mechanical characteristics, and for the principal dimensions of ceramic string insulator units of the long rod type. This standard is applicable to string insulator units for use on overhead lines situated in lightly polluted areas, and the creepage distances given in table 1 have been established accordingly, using the IEC 60815 recommendation of 16 mm/kV for pollution level I. However, shorter creepage distances may be used in some non-polluted areas. If specific operating conditions require or allow non-standard (longer or shorter) creepage distances, the mechanical characteristics as well as the lengths L (see clause 4) of this standard should be used unless the need for exceptionally long creepage distances requires values of L greater than those given in table 1. In the case of special requirements, e.g. very heavy polluted areas and for other particular or extreme environmental conditions, it may be necessary for certain dimensions to be changed. NOTES 1 As far as reasonably applicable, this International Standard may also be applied to similar insulator units outside the scope of this standard, such as insulators for electric traction lines. 2 This International Standard does not include tests on insulators and dimensions of end fittings. 3 Ball and socket couplings are covered by IEC 60120, clevis and tongue couplings by IEC 60471. 4 For the definition of pollution levels, see IEC 60815. 5 The term "ceramic" is used in this International Standard to refer to porcelain materials and, contrary to North American practice, does not include glasses.

This part of IEC 61466 is applicable to composite string insulators with a specified mechanical load (SML) of 40 kN and 70 kN for a.c. overhead distribution lines with a nominal voltage greater than 1 000 V and a frequency not greater than 100 Hz. It also applies to insulators of similar design used in substations or on electric traction lines. This standard applies to string insulator units of composite type with couplings in accordance with IEC 61466-1. This standard prescribes specified values for electrical and dimensional characteristics of composite string insulator units for overhead distribution lines with a highest lightning impulse level of 325 kV and a specified mechanical load (SML) of 40 kN and 70 kN. NOTE - General definitions and methods of testing are given in IEC 61109.
