1.1 These requirements cover floor proximity and other egress path marking and lighting systems that provide a visual delineation of the path of egress. These systems are also used to identify significant egress path features such as doors, stair banisters, obstacles or information placards. 1.1.1 These systems are intended for installation and use as required by building and fire safety codes such as the Life Safety Code, NFPA 101; the Building Construction and Safety Code, NFPA 5000, and the International Building Code sponsored by the International Code Council. 1.2 Photo-luminescent marking systems include materials such as sheeting, adhesive-backed laminates, paints or inks pre-applied to a substrate. They are intended for installation where the facility illumination is sufficient to activate the photoluminescent material. 1.3 Self-luminous systems include constructions as defined in 5.10. 1.4 Externally powered lighting systems include varying designs of electric lamps that may be intended for connection to any combination of normal power supply, emergency power supply, and battery backup. 1.5 These requirements do not cover signs that include the words "EXIT", "STAIRS", "FIRE ESCAPE", or other legally required legends or graphical symbols that are within the scope of the Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment, UL 924. 1.6 The term "product" as used in these requirements refers to egress path marking and lighting systems or any part thereof covered by these requirements unless specifically noted otherwise.

This Standard applies to direct plug-in nightlights not exceeding 10 W input, for indoor use only, in non-hazardous locations and intended to be used in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1, and the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70. Light source types include incandescent candelabra base lamps, non-replaceable lamps, [fluorescent, neon, or light-emitting diode (LED) type] or electroluminescent panels. 1.2 These requirements cover direct plug in nightlights for insertion into a parallel slot receptacle rated 125 volts maximum. 1.3 These requirements do not cover: (a) cord-connected luminaires; (b) nightlights with more than one receptacle; or (c) direct plug-in devices with other primary functions, such as room deodorizers, insect repellers, or rechargeable flashlights.

These requirements cover electrically operated household clocks having an input rating of not more than 30 watts and 250 volts to be used in ordinary indoor locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. These requirements do not cover clocks intended primarily for industrial or commercial installations, clocks that form part of a master clock system, outdoor clocks, time stamps, job card recorders, timers, and similar time-indicating and recording appliances, nor do they cover illuminated clocks intended for use as portable electric lamps or for other illuminating purposes. A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire or of electric shock or injury to persons shall be evaluated using appropriate additional component and end-product requirements to maintain the level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this standard does not comply with this standard. Revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.

Particular requirements for electronic step-down convertors with means of protection against overheating are given in annex C. Particular requirements for stationary independent SELV convertors, which are part of the wiring in installations, are given in annex I. Performance requirements are covered by IEC 61047. Plug-in convertors, being part of the luminaire, are covered as for built-in convertors by the additional requirements of the luminaire standard.
