This International Standard deals with the safety of electric battery chargers for household and similar use having an output at safety extra-low voltage@ their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. Battery chargers not intended for normal household use@ but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public@ such as battery chargers intended for use in garages@ shops@ light industry and on farms@ are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable@ this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However@ in general@ it does not take into account??C the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;??C playing with the appliance by young children. NOTE 101 Attention is drawn to the fact that??C for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft@ additional requirements may be necessary;??C in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities@ the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities. This European Standard is applicable to lead-acid batteries used for heavy vehicles. The object of this European Standard is to specify the European requirements of the main dimensions of starter batteries. For new and future developments of the above applications it is strongly recommended that only batteries from the “Preferred Types” series be used. Batteries of the series of “Other Types” exist under several national standards. They have been transferred from the previous standard EN 60095-4. The preferred types A, B and C are newly introduced and correspond closely to the types D4, D5 and D6 with some differences in tolerances and dimensions.

This European Standard is applicable to lead-acid batteries used for starting, lighting and ignition of passenger automobiles and light commercial vehicles with a nominal voltage of 36 V. This standard specifies the position, details of design and dimensions of a system of battery terminals. Starter batteries with 36 V nominal voltage may have the same dimensions and means for fixation as 6 V or 12 V batteries. This can be either intentional or unintentional. Therefore, the compatibility of batteries with 36 V nominal voltage down to electric power nets with 6 V or 12 V nominal voltage should be prevented. Such design of a 36 V termination and contacting system must prevent the case to be connected to a 6 V or 12 V power net in order to avoid serious damage in the 6 V or 12 V power net. For the same reason the design of the battery terminals must prevent that standard commercial jumper-cables may be contacted to the 36 V battery terminals if the battery is installed in the vehicle or not. A commercial application of this standard must expressively be agreed upon as the final standard may differ from the present draft.
