The Directory provides the directory capabilities required by OSI applications,OSI management processes,other OSI layer entities,and telecommunications services. Among the capabilities which it provides are those of "user-friendly naming",whereby objects can be referred to by names which are suitable for citing by human users (though not all objects need have user-friendly names); and "name-to-address mapping" which allows the binding between objects and their locations to be dynamic. The latter capability allows OSI networks,for example,to be "self-configuring" in the sense that addition,removal and the changes of object location do not affect OSI network operation.

This Recommendation defines the error codes that are used in the core ITU-T H.248.1 protocol. It lists the error code number associated with the error code name. It then provides a definition of when the error code is to be used and if the error code is defined in a package. It also provides an indication of what text may be included in the error text descriptor to allow further interpretation of the error code. Clause 4.2 provides these details. The normal actions for failed transactions and commands apply as specified in clause 8 of [ITU-T H.248.1]. Packages may define error codes not documented in this Recommendation. The IANA registry should be consulted for the complete list of error codes.

Recommendation ITU-T H.248.64 has in scope ITU-T H.248 media gateways with connection models using only IP-based ITU-T H.248 streams/terminations. The different modes of IP packet forwarding (in the ITU-T H.248 bearer path) are described. This Recommendation further defines an ITU-T H.248 package for discriminating such modes and protocol elements for the so-called IP router forwarding method. Further ITU-T H.248 packages provide capabilities for service enhanced packet forwarding with respect to the support of additional network address translation.

[ITU-T H.248.1] defines the international emergency preference scheme (IEPS) call indicator and priority indicator in support of priority services, e.g., the emergency telecommunications service (ETS) and the multimedia priority service (MPS). Recommendation ITU-T H.248.25 defines basic channel associated signalling (CAS) and R1 packages and supplemental CAS packages that, in association with the ITU-T H.248 Protocol, can be used to control a media gateway (MG) from an external media gateway controller (MGC). This revision adds a new read-only property containing the current CAS state of the termination, to allow the MGC to resynchronize itself in the event it loses track of this state. This revision incorporates an update to the optionality of the "Pulse off" and "Pulse On" events.

This Recommendation defines two packages that provide enhanced alerting and data transfer capabilities for [ITU-T H.248.1]. The support of these packages is optional.There is a direct mapping between the alert/ri pattern parameter, alert/cw pattern parameter, and to the andisp/dwa pattern parameter. Ringing patterns and call waiting patterns are paired to allow for distinctive alerting sets. In expanding this parameter in the future, it would be desirable to expand the alert/ri, alert/cw, and andisp/dwa signals together, maintaining the distinctive pattern pairings. This will continue to allow the andisp/dwa signal to have a definition independent of the alerting method, linking it only to the alerting style (pattern).

Recommendation ITU-T H.248.26 defines several packages that provide support for extended line supervision and metering analogue lines capabilities for Recommendation ITU-T H.248.1. This version adds a phased metering signal suitable for use with complex metering scenarios that are beyond the capability of the metering signals already present in the package. It also introduces a new package to perform metering pulse detection by media gateways, and updates all the packages in this Recommendation to conform to the new packages template. This revision incorporates updates to the default behaviour of the "Pulse Repetition Interval", "Burst Pulse Count" and "Pulse Repetition Interval" parameters.

Recommendation ITU-T H.248.82 defines a package to allow ITU-T H.248 controlled media gateways to support explicit congestion notification (ECN). ECN is a mechanism to provide indications of incipient congestion affecting a Real-Time Protocol (RTP) stream to a receiver and, usually, to a sender. ECN when used with an RTP stream over UDP uses the RTP control protocol to provide feedback of ECN congestion markings to an RTP sender. The mechanism allows senders and/or receivers to react in order to reduce congestion in real-time communications. This Recommendation only describes the use of ECN in RTP over UDP streams.

This package is used to determine potential information mismatch in the record of Context and Termination identities between media gateway controllers and media gateways for individual terminations, not the MG as a whole (e.g., root termination). It can be applied in such situations as status synchronization of call and bearer, garbage collection for hanging resources, re-synchronization after short disconnection, etc., and cannot be applied in such situations as media inactivity detection, idle bearer detection, re-synchronization after long disconnection or system reboot, auditing for hanging resources, etc. It also offers guidance on the action to take once a potential mismatch is detected.
