This Recommendation defines a package that extends the applicability of the ITU-T H.248.1 Gateway control protocol. Specifically, the packages in Recommendation ITU-T H.248.3 define a framework for specifying capabilities associated with user interface elements, such as text display, keys, dynamically labelled keys, indicators and alphanumeric input. In addition, specific extension packages for telephone keypads and telephone function keys are defined.

This Recommendation defines the error codes that are used in the core ITU-T H.248.1 protocol. It lists the error code number associated with the error code name. It then provides a definition of when the error code is to be used and if the error code is defined in a package. It also provides an indication of what text may be included in the error text descriptor to allow further interpretation of the error code. Clause 4.2 provides these details. The normal actions for failed transactions and commands apply as specified in clause 8 of [ITU-T H.248.1]. Packages may define error codes not documented in this Recommendation. The IANA registry should be consulted for the complete list of error codes.

Recommendation ITU-T H.248.25 defines basic channel associated signalling (CAS) and R1 packages and supplemental CAS packages that, in association with the ITU-T H.248 Protocol, can be used to control a media gateway (MG) from an external media gateway controller (MGC). This revision adds a new read-only property containing the current CAS state of the termination, to allow the MGC to resynchronize itself in the event it loses track of this state. This revision incorporates an update to the optionality of the "Pulse off" and "Pulse On" events.

Recommendation ITU-T H.248.22 describes a package to enable the media gateway controller (MGC) to indicate to the media gateway (MG) to use or not to use network resources associated with a shared risk group when setting up connections. When network connections are associated with ephemeral terminations in the MG, certain resources are used. A failure in the MG may result in the loss of certain groups of resources, whilst other groups of resources remain unaffected. The resources that share a risk of failure are called a shared risk group. A shared risk group is simply a grouping of the network resources (e.g., IP interfaces) sharing the same risk of failure. Each shared risk group could, for example, contain a number of IP interfaces located on the same piece of hardware. If a resource failure occurs, only terminations in the shared risk group corresponding to the failed resource are affected while other terminations are not.

The Fieldbus Application Layer (FAL) provides user programs with a means to access the fieldbus communication environment. In this respect,the FAL can be viewed as a "window between corresponding application programs." This standard provides common elements for basic time-critical and non-time-critical messaging communications between application programs in an automation environment and material specific to Type 19 fieldbus. The term "time-critical" is used to represent the presence of a time-window, within which one or more specified actions are required to be completed with some defined level of certainty. Failure to complete specified actions within the time window risks failure of the applications requesting the actions,with attendant risk to equipment,plant and possibly human life.
