This International Standard applies to the use of bamboo structures, i.e. structures made of bamboo (round bamboo, split bamboo, glued laminated bamboo) or bamboo-based panels joined together with adhesives or mechanical fasteners. This International Standard is based on limit-state design, and on the performance of the structure; see also 7.1. It is only concerned with the requirements for mechanical resistance, serviceability and durability of structures. Other requirements, e.g. concerning thermal or sound insulation, are not considered. Bamboo used as a composite structure may require additional considerations beyond this International Standard. Execution (work on-site, and fabrication of components off-site, and their erection on-site) is covered to the extent that is necessary to indicate the quality of construction materials and products which should be used and the standard of workmanship on-site needed to comply with the assumptions of the design rules.

This International Standard is intended to provide a cyclic test method as a basis for the derivation of parameters which are required in seismic design of timber structures. The method includes procedures to develop the envelope curves (backbone or skeleton curves; an example is given in Clause A.5.) for joints subjected to a cyclic displacement schedule which produces representative demands imposed on the joints by earthquakes. It does not include criteria for parameters which are, at times, stipulated in national standards or building codes. This standard is intended for joints subjected to lateral load ans is not applicable to joints subjected to withdrawal forces. This International Standard is applicable to joints made with mechanical fasteners used in timber structures loaded under seismic action. NOTE 1 In the context of this Standard, the term "joint" means "connection" in present-day North-American English. NOTE 2 It is recognized that, for some special types of joints, modification of the test method may be necessary provided the test objectives in this clause and the principles in Clause 6 are achieved. See Clause A.2 for details.

This standard establishes a system of strength classes for general use in structural codes. It gives characteristic strength and stiffness properties and density values for each class and the rules for the allocation of timber populations (i.e. combinations of species, source and grade) to the classes. This standard applies to all softwood and hardwood timber for structural use.

This standard specifies two classes of permitted deviations from target sizes for structural timber of softwood and hardwood species. It also specifies the moisture content to be used as a reference point for the measurement of sizes, and gives average values for changes in size due to changes in moisture content. It is applicable to sawn and prepared square-edged timber with parallel edges having sawn thickness or widths in the range 22 mm to 300 mm.

The dynamic modulus of elasticity provided by these test methods is a fundamental property for the configuration tested. This value can be related to static and other dynamic moduli of elasticity as measured on the same configuration. 5.1.1 The rapidity and ease of application of these test methods facilitate its use as a substitute for static measurements. 5.1.2 Dynamic modulus of elasticity is often used for surveys, for segregation of lumber for test purposes, and to provide indication of environmental or processing effect. The modulus of elasticity, whether measured statically or dynamically, is often a useful predictor variable to suggest or explain property relationships.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the flexural stiffness and modulus of elasticity properties of wood-based materials by nondestructive testing using transverse vibration in the vertical direction.1.2 The test methods are limited to specimens having solid, rectangular sections.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 These practices cover the visual stress-grading principles applicable to structural wood members of nonrectangular shape, as typically used in log buildings. These practices are meant to supplement the ASTM standards listed in Section , which cover stress-grading of sawn lumber and round timbers. Pieces covered by these practices may also be used in building types other than log buildings.1.2 The grading provisions used as illustrations herein are not intended to establish grades for purchase, but rather to show how stress-grading principles are applied to members used in log buildings. Detailed grading rules for commercial stress grades which serve as purchase specifications are established and published by agencies that formulate and maintain such rules and operate inspection facilities covering the various species.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The procedures outlined will provide data that can be used to evaluate the structural performance, under concentrated loads, of roof and floor sheathing, separate from the effects of the framing, under simulated conditions representative of those in actual service. The procedures are intended to be applied to roof or floor sheathing materials installed directly to framing. They are not intended for the evaluation of the framed assembly as a whole.1.1 This test method covers procedures for determining the resistance to deflection and damage of floor and roof sheathing used in site-built construction subjected to concentrated static loads as well as impact loads from nonrigid blunt objects. It is applicable to wood and wood-based panels and boards, but is not intended to cover profiled metal decks, nor precast or cast-in-place slabs. Surface indentation is not evaluated separately from deflection.1.2 Three applications are covered: roof sheathing, subfloors, and single floors. Roof sheathing is tested in both a dry and a wet condition, while subfloors and single floors are both tested in a dry condition, as well as a condition of having dried out after being wet. These moisture conditions are those commonly experienced with site-built construction. Where it is anticipated that sheathing will be subjected only to dry conditions during construction and use, or else to greater moisture exposure than is indicated in , the corresponding exposure conditions may be modified by agreement between the interested parties. For example, shop-built construction may be tested dry only, although the possibility of exposure to high humidity or leaks and flooding during use should be considered.1.3 The values stated in metric (SI) units are to be regarded as the standard. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
