1.1 This terminology is a compilation of definitions of technical terms used in the plastic piping industry. Terms that are generally understood or adequately defined in other readily available sources are not included. 1.2 When a term is used in an ASTM document for which Committee F17 is responsible it is included only when judged, after review, by Subcommittee F17.91 to be a generally usable term. 1.3 Definitions that are identical to those published by other ASTM committees or other standards organizations are identified with the committee number (for example, D20) or with the abbreviation of the name of the organization (for example, IUPAC International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). 1.4 A definition is a single sentence with additional information included in notes. 1.5 Definitions are followed by the committee responsible for the standard(s) (for example, [F17.26]) and standard numbers(s) in which they are used (for example, F714).

1.1 This specification covers wrought stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications. 1.2 Several grades of austenitic stainless steel alloys are included in this specification Grades are designated with a prefix, WP or CR, based on the applicable ASME or MSS dimensional and rating standards, respectively. 1.3 For each of the WP stainless grades, several classes of fittings are covered, to indicate whether seamless or welded construction was utilized. Class designations are also utilized to indicate the nondestructive test method and extent of nondestructive examination (NDE). Table 1 is a general summary of the fitting classes applicable to all WP grades of stainless steel covered by this specification. There are no classes for the CR grades. Specific requirements are covered elsewhere. 1.4 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units. However, unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units. 1.5 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.6 This specification does not apply to cast steel fittings. Austenitic stainless steel castings are covered in Specifications A351/A351M, A743/A743M, and A744/A744M. This practice is for use by designers and specifiers, regulatory agencies, owners, contractors, and inspection organizations who are involved in rehabilitation of pressurized piping systems.1.1 This standard is intended to establish the minimum criteria necessary for use of a mechanically mixed, blended, epoxy barrier coating (AWWA Class I) that is applied to the interior of ½in. to 36 in. metallic pipe or tube used in pressurized piping systems for corrosion protection and to improve flow rates. There is no restriction as to the developed length of the piping system other than the method of application (“blow through”, spin cast or hand sprayed) and the characteristics of the epoxy coating being applied but the manufacturer’s engineer shall be consulted for any limitations associated with this product, process and its application for the end user. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. This practice may not apply to products which shall be subject to failure at relatively low strains. For low ductility materials, the installed pipe/soil system shall be sufficiently rigid to prevent pipe deformations which could strain the piping material beyond its safe strain limit. 1.1 This practice governs procedures and references ASTM specifications for underground installation of thermoplastic pressure piping, 63-in. (1372-mm) nominal size and smaller. It is beyond the scope of this practice to describe these procedures in detail since it is recognized that significant differences exist in their implementation depending on kind and type of pipe material, pipe size and wall thickness, soil conditions, and the specific end use. 1.1.1 This practice assumes that over the range of anticipated operating conditions, including maximum external loading and minimum internal pressure, the soil/pipe system will offer sufficient structural stability to resist possible excessive diametrical deformation, or even collapse. In cases, particularly with large diameter thinner-walled pipe, for which the validity of this assumption may be in question, the selection of pipe and recommended installation conditions shall be determined by a qualified engineer. 1.1.2 Specific pipe characteristics and end-use requirements shall dictate addition to, or modification of the procedures stated or referenced herein. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. Rules for this Code Section have been developed considering the needs for applications that include piping typically found in electric power generating stations, in industrial and institutional plants, geothermal heating systems, and central and district heating and cooling systemsThis Code prescribes requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, erection, test, inspection, operation, and maintenance of piping systems. Piping as used in this Code includes pipe, flanges, bolting, gaskets, valves, pressure-relieving valves/devices, fittings, and the pressure containing portions of other piping components, whether manufactured in accordance with Standards listed in Table 126.1 or specially designed. It also includes hangers and supports and other equipment items necessary to prevent overstressing the pressure containing components. Rules governing piping for miscellaneous appurtenances, such as water columns, remote water level indicators, pressure gages, gage glasses, etc., are included within the scope of this Code, but the requirements for boiler appurtenances shall be in accordance with Section I of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, PG-60.
