This European Standard specifies the requirements for the homologation of track geometry quality parameters as measured by various measuring devices fitted on track recording vehicles. These measuring devices are described in A1 Part 2 of the standard. This European Standard applies to all track geometry parameters including track gauge, longitudinal level, alignment, cross level (cant/superelevation) and twist. It defines each parameter and specifies the requirements for measurement, the analysis methods and the presentation of results. !Parts 3 and 4 give a description of measuring devices complying partially with this Part 1 according to the specificities of respectively track construction and maintenance machines, and manual and lightweight devices.

Seven pearlitic steel grades are specified giving a hardness range between 200-390 HBW. The rails are either non heat treated carbon manganese or alloy steel, or heat treated carbon manganese or low alloy steel. There are 21 rail profiles specified in this Standard. Two rail classes are specified, differing in requirements for straightness, surface flatness and crown profile. Three classes of profile tolerances are specified.

This European Standard specifies performance requirements for special fastening systems for switches and crossings and for check rails connected to running rails (not independently fixed to to the bearers) on wood, concrete and steel bearers in ballasted track and on slab track. It applies to switches and crossings as follows: — in main lines having a radius of curvature in divergent track greater than 150 m and subject to a maximum axle load of 260 kN; — in light rail systems having a radius of curvature in divergent track greater than 80 m and subject to a maximum axle load of 130 kN. The requirements apply to fastening systems which incorporate a resilient element and are intended for use with stock rail sections in prEN 13674-1. This European Standard is not applicable to rigid fastening systems. This European Standard is for type approval of a complete fastening assembly only. Requirements for quality control are included in standards applicable to individual components.

This European Standard defines: — characteristics that elastomer-based mechanical parts shall achieve, together with applicable inspection and test methods to be carried out for verification; — approval procedure to be implemented by the customer; — guidelines for qualification of the product with specified requirements; — quality monitoring of elastomer-based mechanical parts in manufacture. This European Standard applies to elastomer-based mechanical parts designed to be fitted on railway vehicles and similar vehicles running on dedicated tracks with permanent guide systems, whatever the type of rail and the running surface. Typical applications of elastomer-based mechanical parts include: — vehicle suspension systems; — equipment mounting systems; — joints (e.g.: end-mountings of dampers, elastomer-based bearings, elastomer-based parts used on mechanical couplings); — limit stops. These parts can be: — made entirely of elastomer, operating on their own or in combination with other elastic parts; — made up of elastomer and other materials, adherent together or not. This European Standard does not apply to: — rubber diaphragms for pneumatic suspension springs; — elastic parts of buffing and drawgear springs; — diaphragms, bellows and seals; — hoses and tubings; — transmission belts.
