This International Standard specifies open-loop test methods for determining the effect of braking on the course-holding and directional behaviour of heavy vehicles or heavy vehicle combinations when braking is accomplished using - the service-brake system, or - the retarder or engine brake only. This International Standard is applicable to heavy vehicles — i.e. commercial vehicles, commercial vehicle combinations, buses and articulated buses as defined in ISO 3833 — covered by Categories M3, N2, N3, O3 and O4 of UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and EC vehicle regulations. These categories pertain to trucks and trailers with a maximum mass above 3,5 t and to buses and articulated buses with a maximum mass above 5 t.

This recommended practice covers minimum requirements for air brake hose assemblies made from reinforced elastomeric hose and suitable fittings for use in automotive air brake systems including flexible connections from frame to axle, tractor to trailer, trailer to trailer and other unshielded air lines with air pressures up to 1 MPa, that are exposed to potential pull or impact. This part of SAE J1926 specifies dimensions for fluid power and general use ports with inch threads in accordance with ASME B1.1 for use with adjustable and nonadjustable stud ends shown in SAE J1926-2 and SAE J1926-3. Ports in accordance with this part of SAE J1926 may be used at working pressures up to 63 MPa for nonadjustable stud ends up to 40 MPa for adjustable stud ends. The permissible working pressure depends upon materials, design, working conditions, application, etc. For threaded ports and stud ends specified in new designs for hydraulic fluid power applications, only ISO 6149 shall be used. Threaded ports and stud ends in accordance with ISO 1179, ISO 9974, and ISO 11926 shall not be used for new design in hydraulic fluid power applications.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes performance guidelines for the capacity of the air reservoir systems used on trucks, towing trucks, truck-tractors, trailers, and converter dollies with GVWRs over 10 000 lb, designed to be used on the highway. NOTE: Compliance with this document does not guarantee compliance with the air reservoir requirements of FMVSS 121. The purpose of this document is to establish a minimum air storage capacity for highway-type trucks, buses, trailers, and converted dollies which use compressed air to actuate or transmit actuation power to the foundation brakes. A vehicle's air reservoir capacity is quantified by its ability to provide a brake application pressure which is adequate to stop the vehicle within the emergency brake stopping distances specified in Table II of FMVSS 121, after seven full brake applications with the air compressor disabled.
