This SAE Recommended Practice is applicable to all E/E systems on MD and HD vehicles. The terms defined are largely focused on compression-ignited and spark-ignited engines. Specific applications of this document include diagnostic, service and repair manuals, bulletins and updates, training manuals, repair data bases, under-hood emission labels, and emission certification applications. This document focuses on diagnostic terms, definitions, abbreviations, and acronyms applicable to E/E systems. It also covers mechanical systems which require definition. Nothing in this document should be construed as prohibiting the introduction of a term, abbreviation, or acronym not covered by this document. The use and appropriate updating of this document is strongly encouraged. Certain terms have already been in common use and are readily understood by manufacturers and technicians, but do not follow the methodology of this document. To preserve this understanding, these terms were included and have been identified with "historically acceptable common usage," so they will not erroneously serve as a precedent in the construction of new names. These terms fall into three categories: a. Acronyms that do not logically fit the term. b. Acronyms existing at the component level, i.e., their terms contain the base word or noun that describes the generic item that is being further defined. c. Acronyms for terms that appear to contain the base word, but are frequently used as a modifier to another base word. (This use may possibly be thought of as following the methodology since the acronym is normally used as a modifier.)

The Network Layer document describes the requirements and services for Network Interconnection ECUs (NIECU) thatenable electronic control units (ECUs) on a network segment to intercommunicate with other ECUs on different networksegments of the vehicle network. This document defines various types of NIECUs. The information in this documentapplies only to ECUs that are intended to provide networking services. It is not necessary for an ECU to provide any ofthese services in order to be compliant with the SAE J1939 protocol.

1.1 These requirements cover fixed and stationary power converters, and accessories having a nominal rating of 600 V or less, direct and alternating current. These converters are intended for use within electric vehicle land vehicles where not directly exposed to outdoor conditions, and are intended to be employed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. 1.2 These requirements also cover fixed, stationary and portable power inverters having a dc input and a 120 or 240 V ac output. These inverters are intended for use within electric vehicle land vehicles where not directly exposed to outdoor conditions, and are intended to be employed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. 1.3 These requirements also cover converters/inverters that are additionally intended to charge batteries. 1.4 This outline does not cover fixed and stationary power converters, power-converter systems, and accessories intended for use within land vehicles which are not electric vehicles. Fixed and stationary power converters, power-converter systems, and power inverters and power-inverter systems accessories intended for use within land vehicles other than electric vehicle land vehicles are covered under the Standard for Power Converters/Inverters and Power Converter/Inverter Systems for Land Vehicles and Marine Crafts, UL 458.

Procedures included within this specification are intended to cover performance testing at all phases of development, production, and field analysis of electrical terminals, connectors, and components that constitute the electrical connection systems in high power road vehicle applications That operates at either 20 V to 600 volts regardless of the current applied or any current greater than or equal to 80 A regardless of the voltage applied. These procedures are applicable only to terminals used for In-Line, Header, and Device Connectors and for cable sizes up to 120 mm/u2 (4/0). In cases where power levels are mixed in the same connector, (i.e. sensing or normal 14.5 volt system circuits with High Power Contacts) the High Power Contacts must pass J1742 requirements, and all other contacts must pass SAE J2223-2 requirements. The connection system (housing and high power contacts) shall meet J1742 requirements. The requirements and procedures in this document are not intended for connections internal to electrical/electronic modules or complete subassemblies. This document does not contain a test for EMI/EMC since these parameters must be tested as a combination of cable and connector. These are considered system level requirements. Determination of the need and type of test must be considered at that level.

This International Standard addresses light-duty vehicles, e.g. passenger cars, pick-up trucks, light vans and sport utility vehicles (motorcycles excluded) equipped with MALSO systems. It specifies minimum functionality requirements which the driver can generally expect of the device, i.e. detection of and information on the presence of relevant obstacles within a defined (short) detection range. It defines minimum requirements for failure indication as well as performance test procedures; it includes rules for the general information strategy but does not restrict the kind of information or display system. MALSO systems use object-detection devices (sensors) for ranging in order to provide the driver with information based on the distance to obstacles. The sensing technology is not addressed; however, technology affects the performance-test procedures set up in this International Standard (see Clause 7). The current test objects are defined based on systems using ultrasonic sensors, which reflect the most commonly used technology at the time of publishing this International Standard. For other sensing technologies possibly coming up in the future, these test objects shall be checked and changed if required. Visibility-enhancement systems like video-camera aids without distance ranging and warning are not covered by this International Standard.

This SAE document defines a recommended practice for implementing circuit identification for electrical power and signal distribution systems of the Class 8 trucks and tractors. This document provides a description of a supplemental circuit identifier that shall be utilized in conjunction with the original equipment manufacturer's primary circuit identification as used in wire harnesses but does not include electrical or electronic devices which have pigtails. The supplemental circuit identifier is cross-referenced to a specified subsystem of the power and signal distribution system identified in Section 5. This document will provide a common method of identifying circuit function for commercially available Class 8 vehicles. It will guide the service technician in diagnosing vehicle electrical subsystems. The identification method will supplement component OEM circuit identification for each major subsystem.

The following topics are included in this report: Section 2. References, Section 3- Definitions, Section 4- Material Selection, Section 5- Production Considerations, Section 6- Initial Structural Integrity, Section 7- In-Vehicle Testing, Section 8- Laboratory Testing The Material Selection section lists environmental factors and material properties which should be considered when determining appropriate fan material(s) for a given application. The Production Considerations section covers various aspects of machine selection, mold design, and process control. The Initial Structural Integrity section lists factors which should be considered in addition to those covered by the same section of SAE J1390. The In-Vehicle Testing section lists factors which should be considered in addition to those covered by the same section of SAE J1390. The Laboratory Testing section addresses some test considerations and methods for nonmetallic fans which differ from those used with metallic fans or which were not included in the Durability Test Methods section of SAE J1390. This report exists to identify general methodology which addresses the areas of evaluation listed previously for injection-molded nylon fans. It is envisioned that those working with other processes and/or materials can use SAE J1390 and this document as starting points in the development of structural analysis methodology pertinent to their particular combination(s).
