This specification covers polythioether rubber fuel resistant sealing compounds supplied as a two component system which cures at room temperature. This product has been used in aircraft integral fuel tanks for repair of fillet and fastener seals and faying surface seals as well as initial sealing of faying surfaces, overcoating of fasteners, and sealing of seams and joints, for service from -80 to +320°F (-62 to +160°C), with short-term recurring exposures (approximately six hours) up to 360°F (182°C), but usage is not limited to such applications. This product is not recommended for use on aircraft windshields or canopies or other applications where crazing or degradation of plastic components may occur. Sealing compound must be applied at temperatures above 50°F (10°C), but will cure at lower temperatures.

This specification covers a silicone (PVMQ) rubber in the form of sheet, strip, tubing, extrusions, and molded shapes. Primarily for parts required to operate or seal from -121 to +446 °F (-85 to +230 °C) compounded especially for operation at extreme low temperatures. Silicone rubber is resistant to deterioration by weathering and by high-aniline-point petroleum-base oils and remains flexible over the temperature range noted. These products are not normally suitable for use in contact with low-aniline-point petroleum-base fluids, including fuels, due to excessive swelling.

These products have been used typically for parts, such as bushings and insulators, requiring chemical inertness up to 500 °F (260 °C) and better mechanical and/or electrical properties than AMS 3656, but usage is not limited to such applications. When improved dimensional stability is required, it is recommended that stress relieved product in accordance with AMS 3659 be specified. For parts such as seals, back-up rings and bearings that do not require dielectric properties and radiographic inspection it is recommended to use AMS 3678/1 Grade B.
