This specification covers virgin, unfilled polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the form of extruded rods, tubes, and profiles. These products have been used typically for parts, such as bushings and insulators, requiring better chemical inertness and dimensional stability up to 500 °F (260 °C) than AMS 3657 and better mechanical and electrical properties than AMS 3656, but usage is not limited to such applications. For spplications such as bearings, seals, and back-up rings that do not require dielectric properties it is recommended to use AMS 3678/1 Grade B.

This specification covers a silicone (VMQ) rubber, reinforced with glass cloth in the form of sheet. This sheet has been used typically for gaskets or seals requiring a resilient, nonporous sheet material suitable for operations from -67 to +401 °F (-55 to +205 °C), but usage is not limited to such applications. The material is resistant to deterioration by weathering and aircraft piston engine oil and remains flexible over the temperature range noted. This material is not normally suitable for use in contact with gasoline or aromatic fuels and low-aniline-point, petroleum-base fluids due to excessive swelling of the elastomer.

This specification covers a deicing/anti-icing material in the form of a fluid. The fluid is generally used heated either diluted with water, or as supplied, for the removal of, and time-limited protection against, deposits of frost, ice, and snow on exterior aircraft surfaces prior to takeoff. Consult aircraft manufacturer's maintenance manual and service letters to determine any restrictions relating to the use of deicing/anti-icing fluids for type and model of aircraft being treated. Refer also to SAE ARP 4737. The manufacturer shall determine and report the lowest operational use temperature (LOUT) for the recommended dilutions of their fluid(s). The LOUT for an SAE Type I fluid is the lowest temperature at which the fluid has been tested and certified in accordance with the appropriate aerodynamic acceptance tests (3.5.3) while maintaining the 10 °C (18 °F) freezing point buffer (see SAE ARP 4737).

This specification covers an ethylene propylene (EPDM) rubber in the form of sheet, strip, tubing, extrusions, and molded shapes. This products has been used typically for parts, such as door seals, low-pressure gaskets, dust covers, and shock absorption devices, requiring resistance to weathering, phosphate ester base hydraulic fluids, and polar solvents such as steam, water, and ketones, but usage is not limited to such applications. This material has fair resistance to all materials listed. Where better resistance to a particular fluid is required, use an AMS for the material compounded specifically for good resistance to that fluid. While the materials, methods, applications, and processes described or referenced in this specification may involve the use of hazardous materials, this specification does not address the hazards which may be involved in such use. It is the sole responsibility of the user to ensure familiarity with the safe and proper use of any hazardous materials and to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of all personnel involved.
