This part of ISO 5350 specifies a method for the estimation by transmitted light of the visible dirt and shives in laboratory sheets prepared from pulp. It is, in principle, applicable to all kinds of pulp, although it is mainly intended for pulp that is not manufactured in sheet form. This part of ISO 5350 can also be applied to mill sheeted pulp, if the sheets have high grammage or are very opaque for other reasons, in which case ISO 5350-2 is not applicable. This part of ISO 5350 is not intended for recycled pulp. NOTE Shives in mechanical pulp are usually determined by means based on screening or optical analyses. Some grades of mechanical pulps can cause problems in sheet-making or inspection, which makes this part of ISO 5350 impractical.

This part of ISO 5350 specifies a method for tne estimation by transmitted light of the visible dirt and shives in pulp manufactured in sheets. It does not apply to unbleached kraft pulps or to any other sheeted pulps that are too opaque to allow for the estimation of the minimum size or for minimum contrast specks to be counted, in accordance with this part of ISO 5350. The maximum grammage for most pulp sheets is in the range 800 g/m2 to 1 000 g/m2. If the sheets of the mill sheeted pulp have high grammage or are very opaque for other reasons, ISO 5350-1 should be applied. NOTE For thick sheets, with highly textured surfaces and/or with density variations, wetting the sheet will cause optical variations, called lens distortions, that will distort the perceived size of a dirt speck, thus reducing the precision of the size estimation. Alternatively, use ISO 5350-1 to disintegrate the sheet and to prepare laboratory sheets for the size estimation. This part of ISO 5350 is not intended for recycled pulp.

This part of ISO 5350 specifies a method using instrumental inspection by reflected light for the estimation of visible dirt and shives in pulp manufactured in sheets, in terms of Equivalent Black Area (EBA) of dirt specks within the physical area range of 0,02 mm2 to 3,0 mm2. Using the algorithm prescribed in this part of ISO 5350, the maximum dirt size is limited to 3,0 mm2. Extension to other speck sizes (for example, those greater than 3,0 mm2 in physical area) may require changes in equipment, calculation procedures, or both, and is not covered in this part of ISO 5350. This part of ISO 5350 cannot be used for physical area measurements, since it may not correctly measure the dirt specks for that mode of measurement. The specimen to be evaluated should have a brightness, as determined by ISO 3688, of 30 % or greater. It may be necessary to reform some pulp sheets into laboratory sheets, if the surface is too rough or textured. This part of ISO 5350 is also intended for recycled pulp.

This International Standard specifies an accelerated speed method for determining the surface strength in terms of the pick velocity and pick resistance of coated and uncoated paper and board, and in terms of the delamination resistance of the liner on paperboard, by simulating the behaviour in the printing process. Because of the limited area tested and the general character of the test, it will not usually detect local imperfections such as surface debris. This test is especially important for papers and boards which are to be printed in lithographic offset or letterpress, because the inks used in these techniques traditionally have a high viscosity and high tack values. Due to the increasing tendency for the tack and viscosity of modern flexographic inks to be high, this method is also useful in that field. In the interpretation of the test results, attention must be given to the fact that the results can be seriously influenced by differences in testing conditions, differences in instruments and differences in the calibration state of the test equipment. The pick velocity, etc., determined here should not be interpreted as being the running speed of a printing press in practice. NOTE 1 Although IGT-type testers of the pendulum type are outside the scope of this International Standard, the described method can also be used for these instruments. The results will be slightly different, due to the difference in velocity profile. NOTE 2 The use of the Westvaco type device and the use of tack-graded inks are not covered by this International Standard.
