This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This International Standard deals with the safety of fixed electric immersion heaters for household and similar purposes that are intended for installation in a water tank open to the atmosphere for heating water to a temperature below its boiling point. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. NOTE 101 The water tank may have alternative means for heating water, such as the circulation of hot water supplied from a separate boiler. NOTE 102 Immersion heaters having a rated power Input up to 25 kW for incorporation as an alternative heating source in central heating boilers are also within the scope of this standard. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account - the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision; - playing with the appliance by young children. NOTE 103 Attention is drawn to the fact that for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary; in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities. NOTE 104 This standard does not apply to appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes; appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); heating elements incorporated in appliances such as • appliances for heating liquids (IEC 60335-2-15); . storage water heaters (IEC 60335-2-21); • instantaneous water heaters (IEC 60335-2-35); aquarium heaters (IEC 60335-2-55); portable immersion heaters (IEC 60335-2-74); engine preheaters such as those for cars and buses.

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This International Standard deals with the safety of electric blankets, pads and other flexible appliances that heat the bed or human body, for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. This standard also applies to control units supplied with the appliance. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account – the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision; – playing with the appliance by young children. NOTE 101 Children are considered to be old enough to use an appliance without supervision when they have been adequately instructed by a parent or guardian and are deemed competent to use the appliance safely. NOTE 102 Attention is drawn to the fact that – for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary; – in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities. NOTE 103 This standard does not apply to – appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); – rigid bed warmers, such as those of metal or ceramic material; – water bed heaters (IEC 60335-2-66); – heating appliances for breeding and rearing animals (IEC 60335-2-71); – foot warmers and heating mats (IEC 60335-2-81); – appliances specifically intended for use under medical supervision (IEC 60601-2-35).

This International Standard applies to electric irons for household or similar use. The purpose of this standard is to state and define the principal performance characteristics of electric irons for household or similar use which are of interest to the user and to describe the standard methods for measuring these characteristics. Electric irons covered by this standard include −dry irons; −steam irons; −vented steam irons with motor pump; −spray irons; −steam irons with separate water reservoir or boiler/generator having a capacity not exceeding 5 l. This standard is concerned neither with safety nor with performance requirements. NOTE The primary characteristic to be taken into account in assessing the performance of an electric iron is its basic ability to produce a smooth finish to textile materials, without risk of scorching or other damage. lt has not proved possible to devise a single method which will measure this characteristic in a consistently reproducible way and measurements have therefore been included to check certain factors, such as the temperature of the soleplate at the mid-point, sole-plate temperature distribution, etc., which affect the basic characteristic. In evaluating the results, it must be realized that, while a very exceptional result in any one of them may significantly affect performance, there is considerable latitude in the combination of results which will give satisfactory ironing performance, and too much significance should not be attached to minor differences in any one result

This International standard applies to electric coffee makers for household and similar use. It does not apply to appliances designed exclusively for commercial or industrial use. The object of this standard is to state and to define the main performance characteristics, which are of interest to the user and to describe the standard methods for measuring these characteristics. This standard is concerned neither with safety nor performance requirements. Taking into account the degree of accuracy and repeatability, due to variations in time and origin of test materials and ingredients and the influence of the subjective judgement of test operators, the described test methods may be applied more reliably for comparative testing of a number of appliances at approximately the same time, in the same laboratory, by the same operator and with the same utensils, rather than for testing single appliances in different laboratories. NOTE 1 Similar use denotes use in premises other than household, for example offices, where the appliance is used in a similar way to normal household use. NOTE 2 The measuring methods of this standard are specific to coffee makers with a view to the following types of coffee percolator, filter type coffee makers and espresso coffee makers; they may, however, be used for coffee makers having other systems, as far as this is reasonable.

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This International Standard deals with: • the safety of microwave ovens with a cavity door intended for commercial use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances. • the safety of combination microwave ovens with a cavity door, the requirements for which are contained in Annex AA. • the safety of microwave ovens without a cavity door and with transportation means that are intended for commercial use only, for the heating of food and beverages, the requirements for which are contained in Annex BB.. Microwave ovens, covered by annex BB, have transportation means for moving the microwave load through the microwave oven. Requirements for tunnel microwave ovens and several types of microwave vending machines are covered. NOTE 101 In annex BB a microwave oven without a cavity door and with transportation means is described as a microwave oven. All clauses of this standard apply to these appliances unless otherwise specified in Annex BB. This international standard also takes into account ordinary persons having access to the removing area of the vending machine. NOTE 102 The appliance may be built into a vending machine, in which case IEC 60335-2-75 may also be applicable. NOTE 103 Appliances that use non-electrical energy are within the scope of this standard. In general, this standard does not take into account – the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision; – playing with the appliance by young children. This international standard does not take into account the use of a microwave oven without a cavity door and with transportation means by ordinary persons except in the vicinity of entrance and exit ports. NOTE 104 The rationales for particular microwave exposure conditions and measures related to microwave energy being confined by an open structure are in Annex BB. NOTE 105 Attention is drawn to the fact that – for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary; – for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements may be necessary;

This proposed revision of ASHRAE Standard 118.2 - 1993, Method of Testing for Rating Residential Water Heaters, incorporates various changes to improve clarity and consistency. Some material was moved to appendices. Other changes were to require one pre-draw, to require a 24 hour soak-in period before the test, and to handle recovery periods that are preceded by multiple draws. The tolerances allowed in some measurements were reduced and the references were updated.
