A unique aminoglycoside antibiotic which binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes and suppresses protein synthesis. Unlike most aminoglycoside antibiotics which exhibit broad activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, kasugamycin exhibits limited activity against phytopathogenic microbes. Used as a pesticide. Binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome and suppresses protein synthesis. Inhibits translation initiation of canonical but not of leaderless messenger RNAs.
