Understanding the cellular processes in tissue samples requires microscopy on the sub micrometre scale. Fluorescent labelling can aid identification, but the resolution limitations of light microscopy prevents good structural context. Electron microscopy (EM), on the other hand, ensures exceptional structural context but necessitates complex sample preparation including heavy metal staining in order to visualise the relevant ultrastructure.
