This part of IEC 60050 gives the general mathematical terminology used in the fields of
electricity, electronics and telecommunications, together with basic concepts in linear algebra.
It maintains a clear distinction between mathematical concepts and physical concepts, even if
some terms are used in both cases. Another part will deal with functions.
Many mathematical terms are used in IEV, not all of them being self-explainatory or uniquely
understood. The object is therefore to collect such mathematical concepts and to present
them as terms and descriptions given in logical order according to their interdependence. The
descriptions are definitions from the terminological point of view, but they are not always
complete definitions in mathematical sense. Their main goal is to distinguish among particular
concepts. In consequence, this part of the IEV should not be regarded as a mathematical
textbook, but rather as a set of terms with their equivalents in many languages and with
descriptions in the main IEV languages.
This terminology is consistent with the terminology developed in the other specialized parts of
the IEV.
