This standard specifies the set of requirements that ensure the correct functioning of disc spring. These include requirements relating to the materials and manufacturing process, tolerances on dimensions and spring forces, and also the permissible relaxation and fatigue life of such springs as a function of stress. All requirements specified here are minimum requirements. This standard covers three dimensional series of disc springs. NOTE In this standard, disc springs are divided into three groups and three dimensional series. Classification into groups is based on the manufacturing process, which is a function of the material thickness. The assignment of disc springs to dimensional series is governed by the h0/t ratio.

Springs or spring elements made of elastomers or plastics are increasingly used for industrial applications, particularly for precision engineering equipment. They offer many advantages over conventional metal springs, deriving from material properties, possible component designs and plastic-specific manufacturing procedures. In comparison to metal springs, the material-specific properties such as creep, temperature dependency of material parameters, load duration and strength, or low softening temperatures result in significant differences for the calculation and the design of plastic springs. In the context of this standard, the following classification is made: traditional plastic springs, bent moulding elements, film hinges and elastomer springs. The classification considers specific application areas and the processed material.

This International Standard specifies the materials, shapes, spring characteristics, tolerances, manufacturing requirements and test methods for common helical compression springs, which are made from hot coiled round section steel bar, and then quenched and tempered (hereinafter simply "springs"). The following limit values apply to springs conforming to this International Standard: — free length: ≤ 900 mm; — spring index: 3 to 12; — slenderness ratio: 0,8 to 4; — active coils: ≥ 3; — spring pitch: < 0,5D; — wire diameter: 8 mm to 60 mm; — mean diameter of coil: ≤ 460 mm. This International Standard is not applicable to coil springs with special performance requirements, such as railway and automotive suspensions.
