The object of this part is to define the general principles and the technical details of the measurement of the magnetic properties of magnetic sheets by means of a single sheet tester. This part of IEC 60404 is applicable at power frequencies to: a) grain oriented magnetic sheet and strip: for the measurement between 1,0 T and 1,8 T of: – specific total loss; – specific apparent power; – r.m.s. value of the magnetic field strength; for the measurement up to peak values of magnetic field strength of 1 000 A/m of: – peak value of the magnetic polarization; – peak value of the magnetic field strength. b) non-oriented magnetic sheet and strip: for the measurement between 0,8 T and 1,5 T of: – specific total loss; – specific apparent power; – r.m.s. value of excitation current; for the measurement up to peak values of magnetic field strength of 10 000 A/m of: – peak value of the magnetic polarization; – peak value of the magnetic field strength. The single sheet tester is applicable to test specimens obtained from magnetic sheets and strips of any quality. The magnetic characteristics are determined for a sinusoidal induced voltage, for specified peak values of magnetic polarization and for a specified frequency. The measurements are made at an ambient temperature of 23 °C ± 5 °C on test specimens which have first been demagnetized. NOTE Throughout this part the quantity "magnetic polarization" is used as defined in IEC 60050(901). In some standards of the IEC 60404 series, the quantity "magnetic flux density" was used.

5.1 This test method provides a controlled corrosive environment which can be utilized to produce relative corrosion resistance information for sintered permanent magnets. 5.2 Although prediction of performance in natural environments has seldom been statistically correlated with corrosion test results, sufficient empirical results are available to support the usefulness of this test in quantifying relative resistance to corrosion from moisture and heat. 5.3 The reproducibility of results in this test method is dependent on the type, size, and shape of specimens tested, and the control of the operating variables. In any testing program, sufficient replicates should be included to establish confidence limits. Replicates may be run simultaneously, in subsequent test runs, or in duplicate test chambers. 5.4 When multiple test chambers and operators are utilized, efforts shall be made to perform a suitable repeatability and reproducibility study for the equipment, operators, and test method. 1.1 This test method covers the equipment, procedures, and measurement of the resistance of permanent magnet alloys against corrosion in high temperature, high pressure water vapor environments. This test is also known as the Bulk Corrosion Test (BCT). 1.2 The values and equations stated in customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within this standard the SI units, when different from customary units, are shown in brackets, the values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This technical report describes the general principles and technical details of the measurement of the magnetostriction of single sheet specimens preferably 500 mm long and 100 mm wide and Epstein strip specimens, specified in IEC 60404-2, of electrical steel by means of optical sensors and accelerometers. This part of IEC 60404 specifies the general requirements, magnetic properties, geometric characteristics and tolerances as well as inspection procedures for pure iron, silicon-iron, nickel-iron and cobalt-iron. The materials are in the form of bar, billet, sheet, strip or wire. The alloys covered correspond to those defined by classes A, C1, C2, E1 to E4 and F1 to F3 in IEC 60404-1. Magnetic materials used primarily for relays, pure iron and steel products, classified only by coercivity, are covered in IEC 60404-8-10. IEC 60404-8-10 is less restrictive in terms of magnetic properties than the pure iron material (class A) and the silicon-iron alloys (classes C21 and C22) specified in this standard, but it gives more comprehensive dimensional tolerances. Non-oriented and oriented silicon steels (C21 and C22) for industrial power frequency applications, classified by specific total loss, are covered in IEC 60404-8-2, IEC 60404-8-4 and IEC 60404-8-7. Non-oriented and oriented thin magnetic materials for use at medium frequencies, classified by specific total loss, are covered in IEC 60404-8-8.
