This International Standard applies to cable reels for a.c. only, provided with a non-detachable flexible cable with a rated voltage above 50 V and not exceeding 250 V for single-phase cable reels and above 50 V and not exceeding 440 V for all other cable reels, and a rated current not exceeding 16 A. They are intended for household, commercial and light industrial and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors, with particular reference to safety in normal use.

This International Standard applies to cable reels provided with a non-detachable flexible cable with a rated operating voltage not exceeding 690 V a.c./d.c. and 500 Hz with a rated current not exceeding 63 A, primarily intended for industrial use, either indoors or outdoors, for use with accessories complying with IEC 60309-1 or IEC 60309-2. This standard applies to: – portable cable reels equipped with one plug or appliance-inlet and at least one socketoutlet, each complying with IEC 60309-1 or IEC 60309-2; – fixed cable reels equipped with at least one socket-outlet complying with IEC 60309-1 or IEC 60309-2; – cable reels suitable for use at ambient temperature normally within the range of –25 °C to +40 °C. The use of this equipment on construction sites and for agricultural, commercial and domestic appliances are not precluded. This standard also applies to cable reels intended to be used in extra-low voltage installations. In locations where special conditions prevail, for example, on board ships, vehicles and the like, or where explosions are liable to occur, additional requirements may be necessary. NOTE – Additional requirements for cable reels for currents higher than 63 A are under consideration.

This International Standard specifies the electrical and mechanical characteristics of concentric lay, overhead conductors of wires formed or shaped before, during or after stranding, made of combinations of any of the following metal wires: a) hard aluminium as per IEC 60889 designated A1; b) hard aluminium as per IEC 60889 designated A1F wire shaped before stranding; c) hard aluminium alloy as per IEC 60104 designated A2 or A3; d) hard aluminium alloy as per IEC 60104 designated A2F or A3F shaped before stranding; e) regular strength steel, designated S1A or S1B, where A and B are zinc coating classes, corresponding respectively to classes 1 and 2; f) high strength steel, designated S2A or S2B; g) extra high strength steel, designated S3A; h) aluminium clad steel, designated SA. The following are examples of some possible conductor designations. Other combinations are also permitted. • A1F, A2F, A3F • A1F/S1A, A1F/S1B, A1F/S2A, A1F/S2B, A1F/S3A • A1F/A1, A1F/A2, A1F/A3 • A1F/SA, A2F/SA, A3F/SA Other possible conductor types not included above are not specifically excluded.

Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies the requirements for single-conductor and multiple-conductor thermoset-insulated wires and cables rated 600 V, 1000 V, 2000 V, and 5000 V, for use in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part I, CSA C22.1, in Canada, Standard for Electrical Installations, NOM-001-SEDE, in Mexico, and the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA-70, in the United States of America. See Annex A for the complete list of types covered by this Standard and the specific electrical codes for which they are intended, and Annex B for a summary of construction and test requirements for these types. 1.2 Table 1 provides a summary of the maximum conductor temperature, voltage ratings, and the number of insulated conductors for the types to which this Standard applies. 1.3 This Standard also specifies the requirements for submersible pump cables, with or without jackets, in Clause 7. No type-letter designations are assigned to these cables. 1.4 Products within this Standard might have applications not covered by the electrical codes listed in Clause 1.1.

Note: See Annex A for the complete list of wire types covered by this Standard and the specific electrical codes for which they are intended. 1.2 This Standard also specifies the requirements for submersible-pump cables, with or without jackets (see Clause 7). No type-letter designations are assigned to these cables. 1.3 In Mexico, the requirements for multiple-conductor thermoplastic-insulated and -jacketed cables rated 600 V are specified in Annex B. In Canada and the United States, requirements for multiple-conductor thermoplastic-insulated and -jacketed cables rated 600 V are covered in other standards. 1.4 Products for which this Standard provides requirements might have applications not described in the electrical codes listed in Clause 1.1.
