"This International Standard specifies the performance requirements for metal halide lamps for general lighting purposes. For some of the requirements given in this standard@ reference is made to ""the relevant lamp data sheet"". For some lamps@ these data sheets are contained in this standard. For other lamps@ falling under the scope of this standard@ the relevant data are supplied by the lamp manufacturer or responsible vendor. The requirements of this standard relate only to type testing. The requirements and tolerances permitted by this standard correspond to testing of a type test sample submitted by the manufacturer for that purpose. In principle this type test sample should consist of units having characteristics typical of the manufacturer's production and being as close to the production centre point values as possible. It may be expected that with the tolerances given in the standard@ the product manufactured in accordance with the type test sample will comply with the standard for the majority of production. Due to the production spread however@ it is inevitable that there will sometimes be products outside the specified tolerances. For guidance on sampling plans and procedures for inspection by attributes@ see IEC 60410."

This International Standard is applicable to independent and built-in single-phase transformers with separate input and output windings, for use on a.c. supply up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz, to supply and stabilize cold cathode tubular lamps (or assemblies of such lamps) having a no-load rated output voltage exceeding 1 000 V but not exceeding 10 000 V (see notes 1 and 2) and intended for lighting and for electric advertising signs, light signals and similar purposes. NOTE - Different requirements apply in Japan and North America, which will be the subject of a future annex to this standard. In order to ensure the safety of these transformers, it is necessary to check their performance. But since no standardization of the characteristics of these lamps exists, reference loads are defined in this standard to ensure reproducible test results. In locations where special conditions prevail, as in ships, vehicles and the like, and in dangerous locations, for example, where explosions are liable to occur, special constructions may be required. This standard does not apply to transformers intended for the supply of lamps or tubes such as low-pressure or high-pressure sodium vapour lamps, high-pressure mercury vapour lamps, halogen lamps, xenon lamps, hot cathode tubular fluorescent lamps, special lamps for document copying machines, etc. This standard does not apply to auto-transformers and electronic convertors This standard may, nevertheless, serve as a guide for transformers with applications other than those specified in the scope, for instance transformers for photographic lamps, as long as their characteristics remain within the framework of those specified in the scope and they are not the subject of a particular IEC standard. Capacitors shall comply with IEC 1048, where applicable. NOTES 1 See definition of 2.9 2 Other limits may be specified in national standards or wiring rules, see annex A. This International Standard specifies sample preparation methods for determining mercury levels in new tubular fluorescent lamps (including single capped, double capped, self-ballasted and CCFL for backlighting) containing 0,1 mg mercury or more. The intended resolution of the methods described in this standard is of the order of 5 %. Mercury level measurement of spent lamps is excluded, as during lamp operation, mercury gradually diffuses into the glass wall and reacts with the glass materials. The test method of this standard does not recover mercury that is diffused into or reacted with or otherwise incorporated irreversibly with the glass wall of discharge tubes. This standard does not contain information on measurement. Measurement is specified in IEC 62321.

This International Standard specifies the safety requirements for fluorescent induction lamps for general lighting purposes. It also specifies the method a manufacturer should use to show compliance with the requirements of this standard on the basis of whole production appraisal in association with his test records on finished products. This method can also be applied for certification purposes. Details of a batch test procedure, which can be used to make limited assessment of batches, are also given in this standard. The schematic drawings of the systems are shown in Annex A. NOTE Self-ballasted induction lamps (where the discharge vessel, the power coupler and the control gear are integrated in the same product) are excluded from the scope of this standard.

IEC 62035:2014 specifies the safety requirements for discharge lamps (excluding fluorescent lamps) for general lighting purposes. This International Standard is applicable to low-pressure sodium vapour lamps and to high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, i.e. high-pressure mercury vapour lamps (including blended lamps), high-pressure sodium vapour lamps and metal halide lamps. It applies to single- and double-capped lamps, having caps as listed in Annex A. This standard only concerns safety criteria and does not take into account performance. The performance standards IEC 60188, IEC 60192, IEC 60662, IEC 61167 and IEC 61549 should be referred to for such characteristics. It may be expected that lamps which comply with this standard will operate safely at supply voltages between 90 % and 110 % of rated supply voltage and when operated with a ballast complying with IEC 61347-2-9 and IEC 60923, with a starting device complying with IEC 61347-2-1 and IEC 60927, and in a luminaire complying with IEC 60598-1. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1999, AMD1:2003 and AMD2:2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition. Photobiological safety requirements are taken care of on basis of the risk group concept of IEC 62471 and the technical report IEC TR 62778 on blue light hazard. This has consequences for terms, marking, structure of 4.6, and introduction of a new symbol "Caution, do not stare at light source". Special attention is given to blue light hazard.
