DVB-S (EN 300 421 [2]) was introduced as a standard in 1994 and DVB-DSNG (EN 301 210 [3]) in 1997. The DVB-S standard specifies QPSK modulation and concatenated convolutional and Reed-Solomon channel coding, and is now used by most satellite operators worldwide for television and data broadcasting services. DVB-DSNG specifies, in addition to DVB-S format, the use of 8PSK and 16QAM modulation for satellite news gathering and contribution services.

This part of IEC 61603 gives methods for measuring and specifying those characteristics of wide band audio IR transmission systems not covered by part 1 of this standard (see also 3.1). It allows systems which make different economic use of the available bandwidth to be described in order that conclusions regarding interference and compatibility can be drawn. Interface (matching) values and other system characteristics are also covered. This part of IEC 61603 replaces chapter 1 of IEC 60764, which covers only two carrier frequencies for analogue audio signals, and which does not cover digital audio.

This part of IEC 61606 deals with the basic methods of measurement of the audio characteristics of the digital audio part of audio and audiovisual equipment for both consumer and professional use. The common measuring conditions and methods, described in this standard, are used for the measurement of the performance characteristics of equipment having an audio bandwidth equal to approximately one-half of the sampling frequency of a system, where the audio information is processed in the form of digital data. CD players, DAT recorders, digital amplifiers, digital sound broadcast receivers and television broadcast receivers with digital sound are examples. Methods specified in this standard are not applicable to systems incorporating bit-rate reduced digital audio signals that have data loss. This standard describes tests for equipment which has digital input with analogue output and analogue input with digital output. Future revisions of this standard will cover digital-in/digital-out and analogue-in/analogue-out tests. This standard does not apply to power amplifiers. NOTE 1 A digital audio system having an analogue input and an analogue output with digital signal processing may have different characteristics from those of a pure analogue audio system due to sampling of the audio signal and performance of incorporated A/D and D/A converters. Measurement methods described in IEC 60268-3 may not give correct results when applied to a digital system. NOTE 2 The methods described are mostly based on sampling frequencies of 32 kHz and higher. NOTE 3 For tests of those systems of digital-in-digital-out, and analogue-in - analogue-out test, refer to AES 17. NOTE 4 This standard is planned to provide the industry with a harmonized set of methods of measurements for digital audia equipment as described in the first edition of IEC 61606 (1997), AES 17 and EIAJ CP-2150.

This International Standard specifies methods of measurement for the power consumption of TV receivers, VCRs, Set Top Boxes (STBs), audio equipment and multi-function equipment for consumer use. Moreover the different modes of operation which are relevant for the power consumption are defined. The methods of measurement are only applicable for equipment which can be connected to the mains. The measuring conditions in this standard represent the normal use of the equipment and may differ from specific conditions, for example as specified in safety standards.

This part of IEC 60958 describes a serial, uni-directional, self-clocking interface for the interconnection of digital audio equipment for consumer and professional applications. It specifies the basic structure of the interface. Separate documents define items specific to particular applications. The interface is primarily intended to carry monophonic or stereophonic programmes, encoded using linear PCM and with a resolution of up to 24 bits per sample. When used for other purposes, the interface is able to carry audio data coded other than as linear PCM coded audio samples. Provision is also made to allow the interface to carry data related to computer software or signals coded using non-linear PCM. The format specification for these applications is not part of this standard. The interface is intended for operation at audio sampling frequencies of 32 kHz and above. Auxiliary information is transmitted along with the programme.
