This standard applies to all types of S/R machines, restricted to the rails on which they travel within and outside the aisles, which embody lifting means and may embody lateral handling facilities, for the storage and retrieval of unit loads and/or long goods such as bar materials and/or for order picking or similar duties. Also included is the transfer equipment used to change between aisles. Control of machines may range from manual to fully automatic. This standard does not apply to free ranging industrial trucks or robots. References in this standard to racking, buildings and systems only apply where it is necessary to assess the hazards and risks at their interfaces with S/R machines. This standard deals with all significant hazards relevant to rail dependent storage and retrieval equipment, when they are used as intended under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer (see Clause 4). This standard applies to machines and equipment that are manufactured after the date of issue of this standard. Illustrations of examples of machines and transfer equipment to which this standard applies are shown in Annex A. Safety requirements and/or measures in this standard apply to equipment used under indoor conditions. However, additional risk assessments and safety measures need to be considered for uses in severe conditions, e.g. freezer applications, high temperatures, loads, the nature of which could lead to a dangerous situation (e.g. especially brittle loads, explosives), earthquake effects and also contact with foodstuff. Hazards during decommissioning are not covered. This European Standard deals as well with the technical requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Noise emitted by these machines is not considered as significant but as a relevant hazard. This means that the manufacturer of the machine is obliged to carry out noise reduction and indicate the noise level.

This European standard specifies tolerances, deformations and clearances that pertain to the production, assembly and erection of adjustable pallet racking including the interaction with floors. These tolerances, deformations and clearances are of importance in ensuring the conditions for the proper interaction of the handling equipment and the unit load with the adjustable racking. The interaction conditions are also of importance in determining the reliability of the storage system to ensure that the chance of an industrial truck impact, pallet impact or a system breakdown is acceptably low. This standard applies to single deep adjustable beam pallet racking operated with industrial trucks or stacker cranes. This standard gives guidance for a variety of issues including operating clearances, manufacturing, assembly and erection tolerance limitations, as well as deflection or strain deformation limitations under loads. This standard specifically excludes the tolerances, deformations and clearances, of the trucks and stacker cranes. It is the responsibility of the truck or stacker crane supplier and the client or user to ensure that the tolerances, deformations and clearances, as quoted in the standard for the racking systems, are acceptable for the safe operation of the overall system. Tolerances, deformation limitations and clearances are defined in relation to the functional requirements, which are largely governed by the handling equipment to be used by personnel, trained and qualified as competent, in the correct use of the handling equipment in association with the specific type of racking system. This standard shall also be read in accordance with the latest guidance from the truck and stacker crane suppliers regarding turning radii, tolerances, deformations and clearances of the truck and stacker cranes.

This European Standard gives guidelines for operational aspects relevant to structural safety of storage systems. Such systems operate with heavy mechanical handling equipment working in close proximity to static storage equipment. This European Standard minimizes the risk and consequences of unsafe operation or damage to the structure. Some other forms of storage equipment are only partially covered and further consideration, beyond the scope of this European Standard, can be required. This European Standard gives guidance in conjunction with prEN 15512, EN 15620, and EN 15629 to ensure that the specifier, user and designer are aware of the constraints in each other's area to allow a safe design to be produced.
