This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) content of milk and milk powder by a method including a clean-up step using immunoaffinity chromatography followed by a thin-layer chromatography (IAC-TLC). The method is applicable to raw milk, low fat or skimmed liquid milk and milk powder. The lowest quantity of AFM1 that can commonly be determined is 2 ng, which corresponds to a limit of quantification close to 0,10 µg/l for liquid milk or dissolved milk powder (for a spot of 20 µl).

This International Standard specifies a method for the preparation of fatty acid methyl esters from milk fat and fat obtained from dairy products. The method is not suitable for the analysis of partially lipolysed milk fat (fat acidity > 1 mmol of free fatty acids per 100 g of fat). In such a case, the alternative method described in Annex A can be used.

This part of ISO 17997|IDF 29 specifies a reference method for the indirect determination of the casein-nitrogen content of bovine milk. The method can be modified for milk from other species or liquid dairy products. NOTE Casein nitrogen will decrease with milk storage time due to casein breakdown even at 4 °C. The casein nitrogen of heat-treated milk will be artificially high because of whey-protein denaturation.

This part of ISO 13366|IDF 148 specifies a microscopic method (reference method) for the counting of somatic cells in both raw and chemically preserved milk. This part of ISO 13366|IDF 148 is applicable for the counting of somatic cells in cows' milk, provided that the eventually mentioned prerequisites are met. This method is suitable for preparing standard test samples and determining reference method values that are required for calibrating mechanized and automated cell-counting methods. This part of ISO 8968|IDF 20 specifies a method for the determination of the nitrogen content of liquid, whole or skimmed milk. It concerns a semi-micro rapid routine method following the block-digestion principle. NOTE The method is a more rapid method than that described in ISO 8968-1|IDF 20-1 and ISO 8968-2|IDF 20-2 since the digestion time is reduced by taking a lower mass of test portion and using hydrogen peroxide together with sulfuric acid and a catalyst in the digestion.
