This part of ISO 16276 specifies procedures for assessing the fracture strength of a protective paint coating of any thickness on a steel substrate of thickness not less than 10 mm. The procedures given in this part of ISO 16276 are based on methods used with different types of pull-off test equipment. This International Standard specifies a procedure for the verification of dry film thickness against nominal dry film thickness on rough surfaces, including the adjustment of the instruments used, the definition of inspection areas, sampling plans, measurement methods and acceptance/rejection criteria. For the purposes of this standard, any specified thickness is taken to be nominal as defined in ISO 12944-5 and the dry film thickness is the typical thickness above the peaks of the surface profile. The procedure described in this International Standard is based on the use of instruments of the permanent magnet and inductive magnet type. Instruments are adjusted to zero and a known thickness on a smooth surface. Measurements taken on a coating on a roughened steel substrate will therefore be higher than the actual value above the peaks of the profile. The thickness of the dry film above the peaks of the profile is defined as the instrument reading minus an appropriate correction value. The dry film thickness is obtained by using the appropriate correction value applied to readings based on adjustment on a smooth, flat, steel surface. Where individual readings, based on adjustment on a smooth, flat steel surface without the use of correction values, are specified or agreed, it is important to recognise that this method does not conform with this International Standard. This standard is applicable if the nominal dry film thickness is 40 μm or greater. NOTE If the nominal thickness is less than the surface roughness of the substrate the uncertainty of the measurement will increase.

1.1 This guide delineates the requirements for development of procedures for the qualification of personnel who perform inspection of coating work. These activities are accomplished to verify conformance to specified requirements for nuclear facility coating work whose satisfactory performance is required in order not to compromise safety-related coating systems.1.2 This guide provides a uniform interpretation of the intent of the requirements in ANSI/ASME N45.2.6 for the inspection of coating work in nuclear facilities.1.3 This guide meets the intent of ANSI/ASME NQA-1.1.4 It is the intent of this guide to provide a recommended basis for qualification, not to mandate a singular basis for all qualifications. Variations or simplifications of the qualifications described in this guide may be appropriate for special coating work other than safety-related coating systems. Similarly, the qualification and certification process might be abbreviated for work of minor scope such as touch-up. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1 This International Standard specifies the performance requirements for the protection, by protective paint systems, of new offshore and related structures exposed to the offshore atmosphere, as well as those immersed in sea or brackish water. Such structures are exposed to environments of corrosivity category C5-M and immersion category Im2 as defined in ISO 12944-2:1998, with special stresses as given in 4.3 and Annex B of ISO 12944-2:1998. It can also be used for other structures, provided that the selected paints or protective paint systems comply with this International Standard. Only new work and any repairs necessary before start-up are included. This International Standard places emphasis on high-durability paint systems, with the aim of minimizing maintenance, and hence reducing safety considerations and environmental impact. 2 This International Standard includes the following: — the test methods to be used to determine the composition of the separate components of the protective paint system; — the laboratory performance test methods for the assessment of the likely durability of the protective paint system; — the criteria to be used to evaluate the results of performance tests. The fields of application are specified in Clause 4. For reference purposes, some typical examples of protective paint systems which have been used successfully offshore are included in Table 3.
