This part of ISO 16276 specifies procedures for rating the resistance of coating systems when a cut in the form of a right-angle lattice pattern (cross-cut) or in the form of an X (X-cut) is made into the coating, penetrating through to the substrate. This part of ISO 16276 is only applicable if the cross-cut or X-cut test method is specified, together with the rating from the appropriate rating scale. NOTE The characteristics of the coating can make the assessment of the result of a cross-cut or X-cut test difficult. This part of ISO 16276 also specifies suitable equipment and defines inspection areas, sampling plans and acceptance/rejection criteria. It does not specify ratings for particular coating systems.

This International Standard specifies a procedure for the verification of dry-film thickness against nominal dryfilm thickness on rough surfaces, including the adjustment of the instruments used, the definition of inspection areas, sampling plans, measurement methods and acceptance/rejection criteria. For the purposes of this standard, any specified thickness is taken to be nominal as defined in ISO 12944-5, and the dry-film thickness is the typical thickness above the peaks of the surface profile. The procedure described in this International Standard is based on the use of instruments of the permanent magnet, electromagnet and eddy current type. Instrument accuracy is verified both at zero and at a known thickness on a smooth surface and adjusted if necessary. Measurements taken on a coating on a roughened steel substrate will therefore be higher than the actual value above the peaks of the profile. The thickness of the dry film above the peaks of the profile is defined as the instrument reading minus an appropriate correction value. The dry-film thickness is obtained by using the appropriate correction value applied to readings based on adjustment on a smooth, flat steel surface. Where individual readings, based on adjustment on a smooth, flat steel surface without the use of correction values, are specified or agreed, it is important to recognize that this method does not conform with this International Standard. This standard is applicable if the nominal dry-film thickness is 40 µm or greater.

1.1 This guide covers the selection and use of procedures for testing water-borne coatings to be used on exterior, interior or both types of surfaces (Note 1). The properties that can be examined or, in some cases, the relevant test procedures are listed in Table 1 and Table 2. Note 18212;The term “architectural coating” as used here combines the definition in Terminology D16 with that in the FSCT Paint/Coatings Dictionary , as follows: “Organic coatings intended for on-site application to interior or exterior surfaces of residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial buildings, in contrast to industrial coatings. They are protective and decorative finishes applied at ambient temperatures. Often called Trade Sales Coatings.” Note 28212;Architectural coatings that are designed to give better performance than most conventional coatings because they are tougher and more stain and abrasion resistant are covered by Guide D3730. 1.2 The types of organic coatings covered by this guide are as follows:(1) Type 1 Interior Latex Flat Wall Paints,(2) Type 2 Exterior Latex House Paints,(3) Type 3 Water-Borne Floor Paints, and(4) Type 4 Interior Latex Semigloss and Gloss Paints. 1.2.1 Each is intended for application by brushing, rolling, spraying or other means to the material appropriate for its type, which may include plaster, masonry, wallboard, wood, steel, previously painted surfaces, and other architectural substrates. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
