Scope and objectThis International Standard is applicable to thermal-links intended for incorporation in electrical appliances@ electronic equipment and component parts thereof@ normally intended for use indoors@ in order to protect them against excessive temperatures under abnormal conditions.NOTE 1 The equipment need not be designed to generate heat.NOTE 2 The effectiveness of the protection against excessive temperature logically depends upon the position and method of mounting of the thermal-link@ as well as upon the current which it is carrying.NOTE 3 Attention is drawn to the fact that the external creepage distances and clearances specified in Table 3 may in some cases be smaller than those required by certain appliance or equipment standards. In such cases@ additional means should be provided when a thermal-link is mounted in the equipment in order to adjust the creepage distances and clearances to the values required by the relevant equipment standard.This standard may be applicable to thermal-link for use under conditions other than indoors@ provided that the climatic and other circumstances in the immediate surroundings of such thermal-links are comparable with those in this standard.This standard may be applicable to thermal-links in their simplest forms (e.g. melting strips or wires)@ provided that molten materials expelled during function cannot adversely interfere with the safe use of the equipment@ especially in the case of hand-held or portable equipment@ irrespective of its position.This standard is applicable to thermal-links with a rated voltage not exceeding 690 V a.c. or d.c. and a rated current not exceeding 63 A.The object of this standard isa) to establlish uniform requirements for thermal-links@b) to define methods of test@c) to provide useful information for the application of thermal-links in equipment.This standard is not applicable to thermal-links used under extreme conditions such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres.This standard is not applicable to thermal-links to be used in circuits on a.c. with a frequency lower than 45 Hz or higher than 62 Hz.

This part of IEC 60947 applies to fuse terminal blocks with screw-type or screwless-type clamping units for the connection of rigid (solid or stranded) or flexible copper conductors for the reception of cartridge fuse-links in accordance with IEC 60127-2, intended primarily for industrial or similar use in circuits not exceeding 1 000 V a.c., up to 1 000 Hz or 1 500 V d.c., and having a maximum short-circuit breaking capacity of 1 500 A. They are intended for installation in electrical equipment with enclosures which surround the fuse terminal blocks to such an extent that they are accessible only with the aid of a tool. For certain applications, for example in control circuits, the fuse terminal blocks may be designed exclusively for short-circuit protection. NOTE This standard may be used as a guide for fuse terminal blocks for the reception of special cartridge fuselinks which do not meet the requirements of IEC 60127-2. The object of this standard is to specify safety requirements and test methods for the mechanical, electrical and thermal characteristics of fuse terminal blocks, to ensure the compatibility between terminal blocks and standardized fuse-links. This standard may be used as a guide for − fuse terminal blocks requiring the fixing of special devices to the conductors, for example quick connect terminations or wrapped connections, etc.; − fuse terminal blocks providing direct contact to the conductors by means of edges or points penetrating the insulation, for example insulation displacement connections, etc. Where applicable in this standard, the term “clamping unit” has been used instead of the term “terminal”. This is taken into account in case of reference to IEC 60947-1.

This part of IEC 60947 specifies requirements for protective conductor terminal blocks with PE function up to 120 mm (250 kcmil) and for protective conductor terminal blocks with PEN function equal to and above 10 mm (AWG 8) with screw-type or screwless-type clamping units, primarily intended for industrial applications. Protective conductor terminal blocks are used to form the electrical and mechanical connection between copper conductors and the fixing support. lt is applicable to protective conductor terminal blocks for the connection of round copper conductors with or without special preparation having a cross-section between 0,2 mm and 120 mm (AWG 24 and 250 kcmil), intended to be used in circuits of a rated voltage not exceeding 1 000 V a.c. up to 1 000 Hz or 1 500 V d.c., most commonly in conjunction with terminal blocks according to IEC 60947-7-1. This part of IEC 60947 applies to switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fusecombination units to be used in distribution circuits and motor circuits of which the rated voltage does not exceed 1 000 V a.c. or 1 500 V d.c. The manufacturer shall specify the type, ratings and characteristics according to the relevant standard of any incorporated fuses. This part does not apply to equipment coming within the scope of IEC 60947-2, IEC 60947-4-1 and IEC 60947-5-1; however, when switches and fuse-combination units coming into the scope of this part are normally used to start, accelerate and/or stop an individual motor they shall also comply with the additional requirements given in Annex A. The requirements for single pole operated three pole switches are included in Annex C. Auxiliary switches fitted to equipment within the scope of this part shall comply with the requirements of IEC 60947-5-1. This part does not include the additional requirements necessary for electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres. The object of this part is to state a) the characteristics of the equipment; b) the conditions with which the equipment shall comply with reference to 1) operation and behaviour in normal service; 2) operation and behaviour in case of specified abnormal conditions, e.g. short circuit; 3) dielectric properties; c) the tests for confirming that these conditions have been met and the methods to be adopted for these tests; d) the information to be marked on the equipment or made available by the manufacturer, e.g.in the catalogue.
