This International Standard, known as the Interchange Standard for Multimedia Interactive Documents or ISMID, facilitates the interchange of Multimedia Interactive Documents (MIDs) among heterogeneous interactive document development and delivery systems by providing the architecture from which common interchange languages can be created. ISMID is a client architecture of International Standard ISO/IEC 10744:1997, Information technology - Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language (HyTime) and is an SGML application conforming to International Standard ISO 8879 - Standard Generalized Markup Language.

This standard specifies an Extensible Markup Language (XML) vocabulary and schema (XSD) for the elements that are common and considered to be part of the essential core of the strategic plans of all organizations worldwide. This is the first of a series of parts that will comprise the Strategy Markup Language (StratML) standard. Subsequent parts will address the elements of performance plans and reports as well as extensions to the core that may be useful but are not considered to be essential for the basic purposes of the standard.

This document defines a set of standard application layer interfaces called JAUS Core Services. JAUS Services provide the means for software entities in an unmanned system or system of unmanned systems to communicate and coordinate their activities. The Core Services represent the infrastructure commonly found across all domains and types of unmanned systems. At present, seven services are defined in this document: Transport Service: Abstracts the functionality of the underlying communication transport layer; Events Service: Establishes a publish/subscribe mechanism for automatic messaging; Access Control: Manages preemptable exclusive control for safety critical operations; Management: Defines component life-cycle management; Time: Allows clients to query and set the system time for the component; Liveness: Provides a means to maintain connection liveness between communicating components; Discovery: Governs automatic discovery of remote entities and their capabilities Each service is described by a JAUS Service Definition (JSD) which specifies the message set and protocol required for compliance. Each JSD is fully compliant with the JAUS Service Interface Definition Language (JSIDL). The purpose of this document is to facilitate interoperation of unmanned vehicle systems, subsystems, and payloads by standardization of the message set and associated protocol.

The SAE Aerospace Information Report AIR5315 - Generic Open Architecture (GOA) defines "a framework to identify interface classes for applying open systems to the design of a specific hardware/software system." JAUS Service (Interface) Definition Language defines an XML schema for the interface definition of services at the Class 4L, or Application Layer, and Class 3L, or System Services Layer, of the Generic Open Architecture stack. The specification of JAUS services shall be defined according to the JAUS Service (Interface) Definition Language document.
