This European Standard specifies requirements for grooved rails and associated construction rail profiles for grooved rail facilities with a linear mass of 42 kg/m and upwards for use in tram transport systems. NOTE Grooved rails are also used for harbour and industrial tracks. Six pearlitic steel grades are specified in a hardness range between 200 HBW and 390 HBW. The rails are either non-heat-treated or heat-treated and are made from non-alloyed (C-Mn) steel in both cases. This standard specifies 18 specific grooved rail profiles and 7 specific construction rail profiles. The grooved rail profiles can also be used as construction elements in switches and crossings. Two grooved rail classes are specified differing in requirements for profile tolerances.

This standard defines the laboratory tests and requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process using welds produced in workshop conditions. It applies to the joining of new, Vignole rails as described in EN 13674-1 of the same profile and steel grade. Compliance with the requirements of this standard does not of itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic. The standard does not cover welds made between different rail sections, differently worn rails and different rail grades. In addition to the definitive requirements this standard also requires the items detailed in Clause 4 to be documented. For compliance with this standard, it is important that both the definitive requirements and the documented items be satisfied.

This standard applies to aluminothermic welds made on Vignole rails of 46 kg/m and above as contained in EN 13674-1: This standard specifies:  the system for training, testing and maintaining the skills of aluminothermic welders. It applies to those aluminothermic welding processes compliant with the requirements of EN 14730-1 "Railway applications – Track – Aluminothermic welding of rails – Part 1: Approval of welding processes". It requires that the system for training and testing of welders shall be approved by the relevant railway authority;  the systems and requirements for the approval of aluminothermic welding contractors. It applies to those contractors using aluminothermic welding processes compliant with the requirements of EN 14730-1 "Railway applications – Track – Aluminothermic welding of rails – Part 1: Approval of welding processes" and who employ welders who are in possession of a valid Permit to Weld as defined in Clause 4 of this standard;  the acceptance requirements for aluminothermic welds. It requires that weld inspectors are competent in aluminothermic weld inspection and are approved by the relevant railway authority. It covers the final inspection of aluminothermic welds for acceptance in track. It does not cover any previous inspections by welders or others.

The project specifies switch and crossing rails that carry railway wheels. These are used in conjunction with flat bottom symmetrical railway rails. Check rails that do not carry railway wheels are covered in Part 3. Eight pearlitic steel grades are specified giving a hardness range between 200-390 HBW. These steel grades are as rolled carbon manganese, alloy steels and heat-treated carbon manganese and low alloy steels. There are 24 rail profiles specified in this standard, but they may not all be available in all steel grades.

It does not cover guard rails which are to protect vehicle, bridge, viaduct and other structures in the event of a derailment. Rails specified in Part 1 and 2 of this standard may also be used a as check rails and if so used, they shall comply with the requirements of Part 1 and 2 respectively. This part of this European Standard lays down the technical requirements and the measurements to be made for the acceptance of work to re-profile both longitudinally and transversely the heads of railway rails, including the parts of switches and crossings that can be reprofiled. For acceptance purposes, two classes of longitudinal profile and three classes of transverse profile tolerance are defined. It also informs about procedures to verify reference instruments to be used for these measurements and informs about a method to approve non-reference instruments to be used for measurements. It applies to reprofiled vignole railway rails 40 kg/m and above. A form of acceptance documentation that may be used is given in Annex C.

The scope of this part is:  to describe the design process of switches and crossings, and the use of the other parts of this standard;  to define the main criteria to be taken into account during the design of the layout, including the safety and functional dimensions as well as geometrical and material aspects;  to define the main criteria to be verified during the design approval;  to define the geometrical and non-geometrical acceptance criteria for inspection of layouts assembled both in the fabrication plant and at track site in case of layouts that are delivered non or partially assembled or in a “kit” form;  to determine the limits of supply;  to define the minimum requirements for traceability. This European Standard applies only to layouts that are assembled in the manufacturing plant or that are assembled for the first time at trackside. Other aspects such as installation and maintenance also influence performance; these are not considered as part of this European Standard.

The project is applicable to fastening systems for use on concrete, wood and steel sleepers in main line ballasted track having a radius of curvature greater than 80 m and subject to a maximum design axle load of 350 kN. The requirements apply to direct fastening systems and systems which incorporate a baseplate and to fastening systems for the rail sections in prEN 13674-1 and prEN 13674-4. The project is not applicable to fastening systems for other rail sections, rigid fastening systems or special fastening systems used at bolted joints.
