This part of ISO 11898 specifies characteristics of setting up an interchange of digital information between electronic control units of road vehicles equipped with the controller area network (CAN) at transmission rates above 40 kBit/s up to 125 kBit/s. The CAN is a serial communication protocol which supports distributed control and multiplexing. This part of ISO 11898 describes the fault tolerant behaviour of low-speed CAN applications, and parts of the physical layer according to the ISO/OSI layer model. The following parts of the physical layer are covered by this part of ISO 11898: — medium dependent interface (MDI); — physical medium attachment (PMA). In addition, parts of the physical layer signalling (PLS) and parts of the medium access control (MAC) are also affected by the definitions provided by this part of ISO 11898. All other layers of the OSI model either do not have counterparts within the CAN protocol and are part of the user's level or do not affect the fault tolerant behaviour of the low speed CAN physical layer and therefore are not part of this part of ISO 11898.

The scope of this recommended practice encompasses the range of environments which influence the performance and reliability of the electronic equipment designed for heavy duty on and off road vehicles, as well as any appropriate stationary applications which also use these vehicle derived components. A few examples of such vehicles are on and off highway trucks, trailers, buses, construction equipment and agricultural equipment including implements. This document is intended to aid the designer of commercial vehicle electronic systems and components by providing guidelines that may be used to develop environmental design goals. Specific test requirements are to be agreed upon by the customer and supplier.

Blade terminals listed in this SAE Recommended Practice may be used for terminating wire ends, or for terminating circuits on devices other than wire. When blade terminals are used for terminating wire, the temper of the terminals shall be sufficiently soft to permit the terminals being assembled to the wire and not show any fracture or cracks which would impair the strength of the assembly. Terminals may be applied to wire by crimping, welding, swaging, soldering, or any combination at conductor grip.

This SAE Standard specifies the test methods, dimensions, and requirements for single core 60 V cables intended for use in road vehicle applications where the nominal system voltage ?60 V DC (25 V AC). It also specified additional test methods and/or requirements for 600 V cables intended for use in road vehicle applications where the nominal system voltage is 60 V DC (25 V AC) to ?600 V DC (600 V AC). Where practical, this standard uses ISO 6722 for test methods, dimensions, and requirements. This standard covers ISO conductor sizes which usually differ from SAE conductor sizes. It also covers the individual cores in multi-core cables. See ISO 6722 for "Temperature Class Ratings".

Embedding of the Network Management (NM) NM defines a set of services for node monitoring. Figure 1 shows how the NM is embedded into a system and that the NM shall be adapted to specific requirements of the bus system used or to the resources of the nodes. NM consists of the following: -- interface to interact with the Application Programming Interface(API); -- algorithm for node monitoring; -- internal interfaces (NM COM, etc.); -- algorithm for transition into sleep mode; and -- NM protocol data unit (NMPDU).Adaptation to bus protocol specific requirements Adaptation to bus protocol specific requirements consists of the following: -- CAN, VAN, J1850, K-BUS, D2B, etc.; -- error handling, e.g. bus-off handling in a CAN, transmission line error handling; and -- interpretation of the status information, e.g. overrun or error active/passive in a CAN.Adaptation to node resources Adaptation to node resources consists of the following: -- scaling of the NM as a requirement of the node; and -- application-specific usage of the NM services. Adaptation to hardware-specific requirements This consists of adaptation to a protocol circuit and a physical layer circuit, e.g. switching the bus hardware to one of the possible physically power save modes.Station management (system-specific algorithms) There are a variety of additional tasks involved in coordinating a network. These are not described in ISO 17356, since they are system-dependent. Hence, these tasks are done by the application, e.g. by a module called station management.Philosophy of node monitoring Node monitoring is used to inform the application about the nodes on the network. Thus, the application can check with the appropriate service if all stations required for operation are present on the network.

This document describes the OSEK Implementation Language (OIL) concept for the description for ISO 17356 real-time systems, capable of multitasking and communications, which can be used for motor vehicles. It is not a product description that relates to a specific implementation. General conventions, explanations of terms and abbreviations are compiled in a glossary, which is part of ISO 17356-1.
