This International Standard is a guide to the selection of test methods for evaluating the performance of vitreous and porcelain enamelled finishes in different applications. It references the test methods available for measuring the properties of these finishes, and correlates these properties to requirements of specific enamelled articles. It is limited for the most part to test methods that are described in ISO International Standards and does not provide acceptance criteria or performance limits for the properties. This International Standard applies to all enamelled articles irrespective of their basis metals.

This International Standard specifies a test method for the determination of the crack formation temperature of enamels for the chemical industry by subjecting enamelled steel specimens to thermal shock using cold water. The value of the crack formation temperature measured according to this test method is not valid for the finished component (see annex A). It is a parameter of vitreous and porcelain enamels for comparing the relative quality of different enamel formulations.

1.1 This practice is intended to provide guidance to architects, specifiers, manufacturers, and other parties who have an interest in evaluating the service life of chromogenic glazings.1.2 This practice is intended to cover the main factors about service life that must be considered when evaluating glazings for performance until the failure time is reached. However, users of this practice must be aware that other factors must be considered, such as the effect of the interaction of materials, the use of the glazings, and to the environment in which a chromogenic glazing is exposed over its service life.1.3 The test methods referenced herein are laboratory tests conducted under specified conditions. These test methods are intended to simulate and, in some cases, to also accelerate actual in-service use of the chromogenic glazings. Results from these test methods cannot be used to predict the performance with time of units in the field unless actual corresponding field tests have been conducted and appropriate analyses have been conducted to show performance can be predicted from accelerated aging test methods.

The document specifies a method of determining, by successive thermal shock tests, the behaviour of vitreous and porcelain enamelled cooking utensils and similar articles under sudden changes of temperature (resistance to thermal shock). Using this test method specified, a series of single thermal shock tests is conducted with a temperature increase of 20 ?between each thermal shock obtained by heating the test specimen from the outside and then chilling it inside with water at 20 ? For the first test, the thermal shock temperature amounts to 200 ? The test ends when the first visible damage occurs.

This test method is intended specifically for testing the porcelain enamel finish on stoves, refrigerators, table tops, sinks and other sanitary ware, laundry appliances, architectural units, etc., where the surface may come in contact with food acids at room temperature. Citric acid has been chosen as the test medium because it is one of the most common of the food acids and will generally provide a measurable result in its action on porcelain enamel.1.1 This test method covers a procedure for evaluating porcelain enamels in their resistance to citric acid exposure at room temperature. This part of ISO 4531 specifies permissible limits for the release of lead and cadmium from enamelled ware intended for use in contact with food (including drinks). This part of ISO 4531 is applicable to enamelled foodware including tanks and vessels which are intended to be used for the preparation, serving and storage of food. This part of ISO 4531 also specifies permissible limits for the release of lead and cadmium from a drinking rim. It is not applicable to ceramic ware, nor to glassware and glass ceramic ware.

This International Standard specifies a test method for vitreous and porcelain enamelled articles using high voltage. This high voltage test is used to detect defects in enamel coatings that extend down to the metal base, and to locate weak spots in enamel coatings. This test method applies to voltages not less than 2 kV and a coating thickness not less than 660 μm.

This International Standard specifies a method of test for determining the resistance of flat surfaces of vitreous and porcelain enamels to pure boiling water and/or water vapour (see note 1). This International Standard is also suitable for determining the resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamels to any other water for example to drinking water and river water. The method is also applicable to determination of the resistance of enamels to the liquid and vapour phases of the corrosive medium. NOTES 1 If temperatures below the boiling point of water are used this should be stated in the test report. 2 The resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamel to water generally depends on the pH value and of the substances in the water. In addition, the test results obtained in the liquid phase are influenced by the corrosion products of the vitreous and porcelain enamel and also of the borosilicate glass of the testing apparatus. Therefore, the test results obtained for different exposure times can differ (see also note in 8.1).
