This Technical Report provides a framework for understanding and maximizing the human factors associated with
successful implementation of Electronic Image Management (EIM) systems.
It focuses on cognitive, physical, organizational, and human factors as they apply to usability criteria for imaging
technologies development, selection, and implementation. It provides a fundamental framework for understanding
the basic issues and concepts of organizational factors, human factors, and ergonomics for EIM systems. The
principles of sociotechnical systems theory are applied to the introduction of EIM into an organization. The
principles of human factors and ergonomics are applied to usability criteria for the development and selection of
EIM equipment, to environmental and implementation issues, and to training for long-term productivity benefits.
