The guidelines in this SAE Information Report are directed at laboratory engine dynamometer test procedures with alternative fuels, and they are applicable to four-stroke cycle spark ignition (SI) and diesel (CI) engines (naturally aspirated or pressure charged, with or without charge air cooling). A brief overview of investigations with some alternative fuels can be found in SAE J1297. Other SAE documents covering vehicle, engine, or component testing may be affected by use of alternative fuels. Some of the documents that may be affected can be found in Appendix A. Guidelines are provided for the engine power test code (SAE J1349) in Appendix D. The principles of these guidelines may apply to other procedures and codes, but the effects have not been investigated. The report is organized into four technical sections, each dealing with an important aspect of testing or reporting of results when using alternative fuels. The first (section 3) deals with such issues as what is a "fuel" in the context of engine operation. The next (Section 4) is concerned with identifying fuel properties. The third technical section (Section 5) covers the testing considerations and calculations for alternative fuels. The final technical section (Section 6) provides some guidelines for reporting the results so that sufficient information is given in a form that allows convenient comparison of the results from different investigations.

There is no ISO standard equivalent to this SAE Standard. This SAE standard identifies and defines the most commonly used terms for piston ring-goove charactersitics, specifies dimensioning for groove widths, and demonstrates the methodology for calculation of piston groove root diameter. The requirements of this document apply to pistons and rings of reciprocating internal combustion engines and compressors working under analogous conditions, up to and including 200 mm diameter and 4.5 mm width for compression rings and 8.0 mm width for oil rings. The specifications in this document assume that components are measured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C (68 °F). Tolerances specified in this document represent practical functional limits and not imply process capabilities.

This European Standard deals with the technical requirements to minimise the risks due to the hazards listed in clause 4, which can arise during installation, operation and maintenance of permanently installed equipment and systems for the power driven parking of motor vehicles, as defined in 3.1 to 3.4 below. Requirements are also given on the provision of information for use, which includes requirements for the drafting of the instructions. Electromagnetic compatibility requirements are also covered. This European Standard applies to equipment and systems for the power driven parking of motor vehicles which have four wheels, are within a maximum size envelope of 5,30 m long, by 2,30 m wide, by 2,20 m high and have a mass less than 2500 kg. The equipment can be manually or automatically controlled.

This SAE Recommended Practice defines a procedure, which will aid in assessing the contaminant sensitivity of hydraulic valves. The approach taken defines a test procedure with flexibility for testing valves in a wide range of contamination levels. The user of this procedure must establish the contamination levels for testing. Three levels are suggested which should cover the range for most valve applications. This procedure does not establish the contaminant sensitivity requirements for any valve. The user of this procedure needs to be aware of the system contamination level that the valve will operate in and select test contamination levels significantly higher than the operating level to assess the suitability of the valve. The test procedure permits a valve to be tested without disassembly and therefore permits protection of proprietary design information. This procedure assesses the contamination sensitivity of valves by contaminant lock. The procedure indicates the sensitivity of valves by contaminant lock due to various sizes of contaminants. The test is designed to assess the contaminant sensitivity of valves in tests of relatively short duration. See Appendix A for guidance as to how the tests and their results may be used. The tests are purposely designed to be severe in order to be applicable to a wide range of contaminated environments. The use of valves in many applications and for various purposes results in differing levels of acceptable performance. That is, the same valve may be unacceptable - in relation to operation in a contaminated environment - in one application and be acceptable in another. The user must make that decision based on a review of the expected level of the specific application and the test results obtained.

These requirements cover the fire and casualty aspects associated with the mechanical performance and the electrical features of engine driven generator assemblies intended for installation in recreational vehicles. These requirements cover generators rated: 15 kilowatts or less, 115 volts, 2-wire single phase; 240 volts, 2-wire single phase; 115/230 volts, 3-wire single phase; 3 or 4 wire, any voltage, three phase. The generators may incorporate alternator or direct current generator sections for supplying energy to battery charging circuits. Only generators having systems voltages of less than 150 volts to ground are permitted for noncommercial applications. These requirements cover both open and totally-enclosed generators. A totally-enclosed generator is so enclosed as to prevent the free exchange of air between the inside and the outside of the enclosure for windings but not sufficiently enclosed as to be airtight. A generator having ventilating openings that permit the passage of external cooling air over and around the windings is an open generator. These requirements cover generator parts and combinations of such parts. These requirements do not cover generators for use in hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code. These requirements cover only the identified hazard aspects of motor-generator assemblies intended for use with recreational vehicles. These requirements do not cover other possible hazard aspects of such equipment. A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the standard was developed and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard.
