1 Scope 1.1 General This Standard details mechanical, physical, and electrical requirements for a newly manufactured appliance that compresses natural gas for vehicles and dispenses directly into a) the vehicle natural gas fuel storage system, referred to as a vehicle fuelling appliance (VFA); or b) the vehicle’s activated carbon adsorbents-based adsorbed natural gas (ANG) fuel storage system, referred to as a vehicle fuelling appliance (VFA). This Standard applies to appliances that incorporate compression and dispensing in the same appliance. Notes: 1) Residential fuelling appliances (RFA) are addressed in CSA/ANSI NGV 5.1. 2) Devices dedicated only to dispensing fuel into vehicles are addressed in CSA/ANSI NGV 4.1. 1.2 Application This Standard applies to all appliances that are a) intended for natural gas only (see Clause 1.1); b) intended for outdoor or indoor installation; c) intended for ambient temperatures not below -40 °C (-40 °F); d) intended for nominal voltage not exceeding 480 V AC; e) certified as a system with temperature compensated pressure limits for delivery of fuel for i) direct fuelling of vehicles; ii) fuelling of vehicles from the system’s internal storage; iii) filling of external natural gas storage systems; or iv) any combination of the above; f) equipped with maximum inlet flow rate not exceeding 10 SCFM (17 SCMH); g) for installation in non-residential occupancies; h) intended to meet installation fire safety requirements in accordance with the requirements of the applicable Code; i) for connection to a single vehicle, multiple vehicles, or storage systems; j) intended for installation in non-hazardous locations; k) for connection to a single or multiple vehicle storage system or external storage systems, with no single storage system having a total capacity of less than 80 L water volume; and l) intended for installation in accordance with NFPA 52 or CSA B108.1 where not in conflict with the requirements in this document. These requirements apply only to ANG appliances for use with vehicle or external fuel storage systems that contain activated carbon-adsorbent material with an MDP/RCP ratio less than or equal to 1.5, and that have a service pressure of 6205 kPa (900 psig). 1.3 Pressure references All references to “kPa” and “psig” throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. 1.4 Resolution of conflicts In the case of conflict between this Standard and federal, national, provincial/territorial, state, or local requirements, the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction take precedence. 1.5 Units of measure This Standard contains SI (metric) units corresponding to the inch/pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the Standard to be used in SI (metric) units. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are stated, the first stated value is to be regarded as the requirement. The given corresponding value may be approximate. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, then the first stated unit or both are to be provided. Note: IEEE/ASTM SI 10 or ISO 80000-1 is used as a guide in making metric conversion from inch/pound quantities. 1.6 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.7 Alternate construction The requirements of this Standard are not intended to constrain innovation. When considering fuels, materials, designs, or constructions not specifically dealt with in this Standard, these alternatives may be evaluated as to their ability to yield levels of safety and performance equivalent to those prescribed by this Standard.

1 Scope 1.1 Applicability This Standard applies to newly produced compressed natural gas vehicle (NGV) fuelling connection devices, hereinafter referred to as “devices”, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials. NGV fuelling connection devices consist of the following components, as applicable: a) receptacle and protective cap (mounted on vehicle) (see Clause 4.4); b) nozzle (see Clause 4.2); and c) three-way valve (external to nozzle and mounted in the fuel dispenser system) (see Clause 4.5). Note: P36HD nozzles designed in accordance with this Standard will not be compatible with existing P36 heavy duty applications using C200 (ISO 14469) receptacles, equivalent to P30HD (see Figure 6). 1.2 Applicable pressures This Standard applies to devices that have a service pressure of either 6205 kPa (900 psi), 16 500 kPa (2400 psi), 20 700 kPa (3000 psi), or 24 800 kPa (3600 psi), hereinafter referred to in this Standard as the following [see Clause 4.8.3c)]: a) “P9”: 6205 kPa (900 psi); b) “P24”: 16 500 kPa (2400 psi); c) “P30” and “P30HD”: 20 700 kPa (3000 psi); and d) “P36” and “P36HD”: 24 800 kPa (3600 psi). The “HD” suffix designates a larger geometry version to allow higher flow rates associated with fuelling larger heavy duty applications. Legacy connection devices produced prior to the 2017 edition of this Standard used the P30 HD profile only (see Figure 6). 1.3 Mating components This Standard applies to devices with standardized mating components (see Clauses 4.4.6and 4.6). 1.4 Applicable design parameters This Standard applies to devices that a) prevent natural gas vehicles from being fuelled by a dispenser with service pressures higher than the vehicle it was designed for; b) allow natural gas vehicles to be fuelled by a dispenser with service pressures equal to or lower than the vehicle fuel system service pressure; and c) prevent light duty natural gas receptacles from being fuelled by a heavy duty nozzle. 1.5 Exclusions This Standard does not apply to repaired or rebuilt nozzles. 1.6 Pressure references All references to “psi or kPa” throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. 1.7 Units of measure The values given in SI units are the units of record for this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. 1.8 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user shall satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.

1 Scope 1.1 Inclusions This Standard details the safety and performance requirements for temperature compensation control used to prevent compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensing systems from exceeding a safe fill level for vehicle fuel storage container(s). This Standard contains safety performance requirements for compressed natural gas fuelling dispenser temperature compensation systems. It applies to newly manufactured dispensing systems and the field evaluation of existing dispensing systems designed primarily to allow for full fill and to avoid over-pressurization of vehicle fuel storage containers under the operating temperature conditions as specified in this Standard. This Standard applies to CNG fuelling of vehicle containers with service pressures of a) P30 [20 700 kPa (3000 psi)]; b) P30HD [20 700 kPa (3000 psi)]; c) P36 [24 800 kPa (3600 psi)]; and d) P36HD [24 800 kPa (3600 psi)]. P30HD and P36HD are designations used in accordance with CSA/ANSI NGV 1, and throughout the document, the use of P30 and P36 are also applicable to P30HD and P36HD, respectively (see Annex A of this Standard regarding applicable vehicle service pressures). This Standard is applicable to the dispensing of only natural gas that meets quality and specifications contained in ASTM D8080. 1.2 Pressure references All references to pressure throughout this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. 1.3 Quality and innovation Nothing in this Standard is to be considered in any way as indicating a measure of quality beyond compliance with the provisions it contains. It is designed to allow compliance of products that may exceed what is specified in the provisions herein. The requirements of this Standard are not intended to constrain innovation. In its preparation, full recognition has been given to possibilities of improvement through ingenuity of design. When considering fuel compositions, controls, materials, designs, or constructions not specifically dealt with in this Standard, these alternatives are to be evaluated as to their ability to yield levels of safety and performance equivalent to or better than those prescribed by this Standard. Note: This Standard is subject to revision as further experience and investigation show it is necessary and desirable. 1.4 Precedence Users of this Standard are advised that the devices, products, and activities within its scope might be subject to regulation at the federal, state, provincial, or local levels. Users are strongly urged to investigate this possibility through appropriate channels. In the case of a conflict between this Standard and federal, provincial, state, or local regulations, the governmental requirements take precedence. 1.5 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. 1.6 Units of measurement All dimensions used in this Standard are in SI units, unless otherwise specified. If a value for a measurement, as given in this Standard, is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to be regarded as the specification. If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, either the first stated unit, or both, are to be provided.
